2. The WHO has its origin in April 1945, during the
conference held at San Francisco to set up the
United Nations.
The representative of China and Brazil proposed
that an international health organization should be
established.
In 1946, the constitution was drafted by the
“Technical Preparatory Committee” under the
chairmanship of Rene Sand, and was approved in
the same year by an International Health
Conference of 51 nations in Newyork.
3. The constitution came into force on 7th April, 1948
which is celebrated every year as “World Health
Day” and theme is chosen to focus attention on a
specific aspect of public health.
The WHO is a specialized, non political, health
agency of the United Nations, with headquarters in
Geneva.
4. The objective of WHO is “the attainment by all
people’s of the highest level of health” which is set
out in preamble of the constitution.
The current objective of WHO is attainment of level
of health that will permit them to lead a socially and
economically productive life also known as Health
for All by 2000 AD.
5. Membership into WHO is open to all countries.
All countries that are part of the UN are also
members of WHO.

8. WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY
The World Health Assembly is a supreme decision
making body for WHO.
It meets each year in May at Geneva, and is
attended by delegations from all 192 member states.
EXECUTIVE BOARD
The executive board has 34 members. One-third of
membership is renewed every year.
Board meets twice a year.
9. SECRETARIAT
The Secretariat is headed by Director General.
The Secretariat is comprised of 8000 international
public servants in 2010.

It works are such as prevention of disease, family
health, environmental health, health statistics etc.
