LITERARY REVIEW
Character
Character or characterization is one of the literary device that is used in the
literature to highlight and explain detail that are important about a character
in literary work.
In the initial stage author tend to introduce the character, then author will use
character behaviour, the tought process, and then express it opinion to other
character in the story
Character itself tend to be divided into two different halves which is flat and
round character. Flat character is a character that can be described in one
word or we can say one dimensional, meanwhile round character is a
character that experience change in the story and evolve with the story itself
DISCUSSION
Character of Mrs. Mooney
“MRS. MOONEY was a butcher's daughter. She was a woman who was quite able to
keep things to herself: a determined woman. She had married her father's foreman
and opened a butcher's shop near Spring Gardens.”
In the first pharagraph or even the first line of this short story the author already using
characterization by straightly introducting mrs mooney character directly. We can see
or understand the character as someone who is determined woman with additional
explanation of what she was doing in the past as the author intended.
“After that they lived apart. She went to the priest and got a separation from him with
care of the children. She would give him neither money nor food nor house-room; and
so he was obliged to enlist himself as a sheriff's man.”
In the second pharagraph we can already see that mrs mooney is character that portray
the image of independent woman as she can provide for herself and two of her
children, without any assistance from her ex-husband. This mark the end of author
direct introduction for mrs money character in this story.
 author direct introduction for mrs money character in this story.
 “She governed the house cunningly and firmly, knew when to give credit,
when to be stern and when to let things pass. All the resident young men
spoke of her as The Madam.”

 In this quote the author now begin to charaterize mrs.mooney by the action
or the behaviour of the character itself by describing it with word
cunningly. Other character opinion of the character can also be used as
benchmark to understand the character behaviour. Mrs mooney moniker
can also indicated the character itself, the madam is a moniker for a
dominering character.

 On the other hand in this short story mrs.mooney can be described as flat
character because there is no character development that are apparent in
the story.
CONCLUSION
 In conclucion we can conclude that mrs mooney while is
considered as a flat character, can have a depth that quite
impressive for short story where everything can become a
plothole. Mrs mooney can also be considered as a
dominering character in this story with quite large role to
shape this story
