6. EDUCATIONAL GAP: EUROPE VS LATIN AMERICA
Latin American education system has one good model, so it is still far to be as good as most European countries
educational systems. There are three important reasons to be discussed regarding this topic. First, Latin American
countries have a defect in their system: the teachers’ autonomy; this phenomenon does not happen in European
countries. For example, the curriculum of Latin American countries demands some activities that limit the teacher’s
autonomy to look for resources and apply them; on the contrary, European countries let the class flow according to
the teachers-students’ development throughout the course. Second, South America presents a lag in the countries’
development because of the low level of research and limited economic resources. Europe presents a high
engagement with education and a big amount of money is invested in it ensuring the development of investment,
knowledge, and technologies. Finally, free education is present at all levels in Nordic European countries while in
South America still has protest rallies demanding free education. For instance, a polemic country is Chile; it has the
best educational model in Latin America, but the education, public or private, is not free. In conclusion, there is a
huge gap to be filled regarding education comparing Latin America and Europe; education must be a priority, and
every citizen should claim free quality education.
