cloudSME UG, StartUp company, CloudComputing, HPC, Workflow
cloudSME greatly simplifies the "access to" and "integration of" cloud computing resources for companies, institutions and research projects, especially in the area of simulation and business intelligence. cloudSME offers a real European solution for European companies.
Formed by partners out of the "cloudSME FP7 R&D project".

2. cloudSME Project
• Funded by the European Commission FP7 programme –
Factories of the Future initiative
• Duration time: July 2013 – March 2016
• EUR 4.5 million overall funding
• Coordinated by the University of Westminster
• 16 initial project partners – including 12 SMEs
• 13 new partners (12 SMEs) joined in January 2015 as result of
an Open Call
• Focus: foster the uptake of simulation software especially
among small and medium-sized enterprises by offering
software as a Service (SaaS) on a scalable platform.
• Founded as a company in January 2016

3. cloudSME commercial offerings
• simulation applications that can be published and directly executed from the
CloudSME App Center based on the software as a service (SaaS) model.
• awarded platform technology with powerful capabilities that smoothly enables
computationally intensive Fluid Dynamics Simulations (MPI support).
• fast-track deployment & a great variety of cloud integration methods (various
APIs, PaaS, Docker).
• the provision of access to heterogeneous commercial and private cloud
resources (IaaS)as well as European supercomputing centres (i.e. German
HLRS, Italian CINECA or French Romeo Center)
• HPC as a service (HPCaaS).
• Security: Data operation in European data centres and industrial security level.
Operation mode “Europe only” possible.
• Advanced and proven technology to model workflow solutions.
• The provision of expert consulting services at each step of software integration.

4. cloudSME Stakeholders
4
• Simulation end-users from
manufacturing and
engineering, mainly.
• ISVs/VARS consultancies
to implement their software
in the cloudSME App Center
or use cloud integration via
API.
• Infrastructure and Service
providers (commercial &
academic providers &
supercomputing centres)
5. Main technological components
• cloudSME App Center, including
– a public landing page
– a web shop, and
– a set of commercial services that are available via APIs and can be integrated
into marketplaces or vendor products.
• CloudBroker Platform
– enables the deployment and execution of compute-intensive applications on
different clouds
– widely automates user, software, resource, job, and invoice management.
– has been ranked as No. 1 regarding its innovation potential by the Joint
Research Centre of the European Commission in a latest study comparing 517
innovations in information and communication technology (ICT) from 279 FP7
and H2020 EU projects regarding their innovation readiness, innovation
management and market potential.
• WS-PGRADE/gUSE Framework
– supports the development and deployment of HPC application workflows
across different types of Distributed Computing Infrastructures (DCIs)

9. Infrastructure Resources
• Commercial clouds:
– CloudSigma (CH/DE) &
– Amazon (different regions)
• OpenStack clouds:
– University of Westminster (UK) &
– University of Zaragoza (ES)
• OpenNebula cloud:
– MTA SZTAKI (HU)
• HPC:
– HLRS (DE), CINECA (IT), ROMEO (FR), ETH (CH)
9
10. Application software
• Application requirements:
– Scientific and technical applications from any domain, commercial
or free / open source
– Linux or Windows
– Usually compute-intensive, batch and command line-oriented, but
interactivity will be constantly improved.
– Single-core or multi-core, single-node or multi-node (MPI, NFS,
…)
• Application areas:
– Engineering and manufacturing (ASCOMP TransAT, OpenFOAM,
Simul8, …)
– Biology, pharma and chemistry (Rosetta, BLAST, AutoDock,
Gromacs, …)
– Generic (shell scripts, R, …) … and many more to follow.
