- Outer space or a small attic, A children’s fable…once upon a time…
- Not as a critical part of the story. Old school theater painted the sets on flats and backdrops, furniture and all.

- A screenplay full of wild parties, stadiums jammed full of screaming fans and wonderful island sunsets might dress the scenes, but

- We know who they are because we see where and how they live. Sling Blade – From mental hospital to small southern town – affects Karl Childers – talks, lives his life and makes decisions. Sense & Sensibility – There is a code of behavior. Carefully planned homes, etc. Dog Day Afternoon – to incompetent bank robbers – mundane as the bank environment that they are trapped in. Brooklyn – money sealed. Claustrophoic – they have to face themselves. Rear Window – Broken leg reduces his world to what he can see through his window. Distorts his perspective…cannot see what is real anymore.
- How is the personal environment in or out of harmony with the character? The world is the background for/source of the essential conflict – trapping characters to confront their desires and limitations. - Conflict = Time Period Conflict = Location (The South)
- Complexity of life, character and world! EXAMPLE – A man reading a book in a noisy construction site is interesting! Contrast and irony make for a visually interesting scene that can define the characters, reinforce and reflect the theme, and move the story forward in unique, dramatic ways.
