Hypnotism for Sexual
    Concerns

  Introduction to Sexological Hypnotism
Amy Marsh, EdD, DHS, ACS, CHt
Hypnotism
• Promotes sexual pleasure
    and enjoyment.

• Manages non-medical sexual
    dysfunctions.

• Helps to overcome shame
    and “negative self talk.”

• Reveals insight into origins of
    sexual hang-ups or problems.

• Can be used to assist with
    “triggering” from sexual
    abuse or rape.
Definition
• Sexological hypnotism combines clinical
sexology or sex coaching with hypnotism.
• Sexology is the “study of what people do
and how they feel about it.” Study of human
  sexual behavior is multi-disciplinary.
• Hypnotism is the use of brain wave states
  to effect positive change.
Sex Hypnotherapy
• Three main uses of hypnosis in sex therapy:

• Etiological - genesis (diagnosis) of sexual problem and
implications for the whole person/system of
    relationships.

• Symptomatic - “Before working directly on a symptom,
the sex therapist must know how the client thinks this
change will affect his/her life...” Expectations, fears,
    benefits, disadvantages, etc.

• Mental rehearsal - Time progression to the set of
circumstances the client sees him/herself thinking,
interacting, and behaving in a sexually satisfying way.
Source: Chap. 6, “Sex Hypnotherapy: General Techniques.” Hypnosis and Sex Therapy by
                                Dr. Daniel Aroaz.
Hypnosis & PLISSIT
• Permission given to and by
    Subconscious/Intuition

• Limited Information -
    provided to and by
    Subconscious/Intuition

• Specific Suggestions given to
    Subconscious/Intuition

• Hypnosis can be used in
    Intensive Therapy
Dr. Daniel Araoz considers hypnosis
“as a state in which the critical mental
facilities are temporarily suspended and
the person uses mainly imagination or
         primary-process thinking.”
Dr. Daniel Aroaz, Hypnosis and Sex Therapy
Negative Self
    Hypnosis
       “NSH robs the sexual
experience (or even the thought
of it) of playful sponteneity and
  contaminates it with anxiety.”
          Dr. Daniel Aroaz
Explore & Encourage
    Authentic Sexuality
• Increase pleasure in these phases: desire,
  arousal, orgasm (Helen Singer Kaplan).
• Add variety.
• Shifting orientations, interests.
• Meet interests of new partner(s).
• Accommodate disabilities, medical conditions,
  aging issues.
Removing Blocks to
  Authentic Sexuality
• Shame.
• Guilt.
• Trauma.
• Religious, cultural, social inhibitions.
• Sensory integration issues.
• Partner influences.
Assist Other Processes

• Hartman & Fithian used hypnosis with 50%
of their clients, to help them relax for
  sensate focus exercises.
• H&F augmented Masters & Johnson
methods by using more sensual touch and
  longer residential programs for couples.
Assist in Gender
        Concerns
• Support transgender, transsexual, and
  gender variant clients by increasing
  relaxation, confidence, healthy self-esteem.
• Support pre- and post- surgery and medical
  procedures.
Hypnotic Homeplay
• Instructing clients in hypnosis techniques as
a form of “homeplay” exercises to support
  and stimulate intimacy.
• Erotic self and partner hypnosis.
• Supportive self-hypnosis (i.e. relaxation).
• Guided meditation & visualization.
• Subliminals (controversial).
• Affirmations.
Use Erotic Scenarios
• May be used to help
    clients remember
    successful sexual
    encounters or fantasies.
    Often useful in
    management of erectile
    dysfunction or other
    times when a client is
    anxious about
    “performance.”

• Hypnotic Homeplay -
    next slide.
Hypnotic Homeplay
• Assist clients to negotiate safety and trust
issues first - prior to hypnotic homeplay.
• Create ways to instruct couples in basic
  erotic hypnosis. Have homeplay objectives
for them, based on presenting issues. Be
prepared to give support during their
  learning process.
• Likewise with erotic self-hypnosis for
  individuals.
Examples of Uses
• To assist relaxation and comfort with
“sensate focus exercises” and other sex
  therapy processes.
• To assist emergence of authentic sexuality
  and eroticism.
• To assist removal of blocks to sexuality and
  intimacy.
• To create erotic scenarios for therapeutic
  and enrichment purposes (hypnotic
  homeplay).
Dual Training Needed
• Hypnotists need training in sexology and/or
  sex coaching.
• Sexologists and sex coaches need training
  in hypnotism.
• All need training and protocols for working
  successfully with transgender and gender
  varient clients.
Center for Sexological
           Hypnotism
• Professional training.

• For sexologists and sex coaches.

• For hypnotists and hypnotherapists.

• High standards and ethics.

• Sex and pleasure positive values.

• Commitment to transgender health.
