2. M.S. in Education Degree - Literacy
The MSE in Literacy Education from UCM prepares certified
elementary, middle school or secondary teachers to pursue
an advanced degree in literacy education. Based on the
International Literacy Association’s Standards for Reading
Professionals, this program prepares teachers for positions
such as literacy coach, literacy coordinator, instructional
coach and other related positions. The program enhances
opportunities to contribute to professional publications and
presentations in the field of literacy education.

In the MSE in Literacy Education degree program, you will have
access to highly qualified faculty who are leaders in the world of
literacy education. You will receive personal advising from one of
these faculty members, all of whom are ready to help you succeed.
Flexible course formats (online and/or hybrid) allow you to work
around your busy schedule.
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
The program includes 35 graduate semester hours in literacy
education. Additional courses may be required for the K-12 Special
Reading Certificate, dependent on DESE transcript analysis of
undergraduate work. Course work addresses areas such as:
• Language Development in the Literacy Program
• Content Area Literacy
• Methods and Materials for Literacy Enhancement
• Literacy Coaching and Literacy Leadership
• Literacy Assessment and Instructional Interventions
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
To be admitted, applicants must:
Complete an official graduate application for admission at
ucmo.edu/graduate.
Submit the following items:
• An official undergraduate transcript showing a minimum
GPA of 2.5.
• Proof of teacher certification or professional endorsement.
• A copy of the last summative teaching evaluation or a letter
from a superintendent, principal or professor attesting to
teaching ability.
