Description of Design Projects for the Master of Engineering:
The main fourth year design project for the Master of Engineering Programme was the hallmark of the programme.
This project entailed first a programme model built on the modelling software Aspen HYSYS to simulate PCS
Nitrogen Trinidad Ltd’s 03 Ammonia Process Plant followed by a thermodynamic/exergetic analysis of every piece
of equipment such as reactors, heat exchangers and absorption columns, using data obtained from the model. The
design project was split amongst a group with each person responsible for sub-sections of the process flow of the
ammonia plant. Exergy is used to pinpoint sources of inefficiencies in a system therefore the overall exergy study
was used to help PCS Nitrogen Trinidad Ltd optimise their operations. For this project I acquired an understanding
of the principals for conducting an in-depth exergy study on a process system, gained a better understanding of
process modelling techniques and software and became familiarized with some of the principals of process plant
operations.
The third year design project entailed the designing of two types a waste water treatment plants that processed
either gray water (no faecal matter present) and black water (contains faecal matter) in separated streams and the
other plant processed black water (all waste water mixed) using data for the processing of waste water from The
University of Trinidad and Tobago Point Lisas Campus. This project was done by conducting relevant research
into the topic of waste water management followed by the modelling of two waste water treatment plants on the
modelling software Intelligen Super Pro Designer. Each model produced gave a product water stream containing
negligible amounts of faecal matter and coli form bacteria after several filtration and disinfection processes.
They also showed the production of biogas (methane) for energy generation and finally the production of
fertilizer. A feasibility study was then conducted to find the more effective of the two plant models. This project
provided me with an in-depth knowledge of waste water management, process modelling, research techniques
and software and engineering economics.
Key skills and traits:
I am a highly diligent person with exceptional people skills. I am naturally curious and have no problem speaking
out and asking questions when I do not fully comprehend a problem. I have no problem with communicating ideas
and explaining situations and solutions to colleagues. Some added beneficiary traits are my athleticism, my fearless
and excited personality and my care for the natural environment.
Computer skills:
I am proficient at Microsoft - Word, Excel and Power Point. I am also knowledgeable at simulation software; Apsen
Tech – HYSYS, Intelligen Super Pro Designer, Circuit Maker simulation software and Programmable Logic
Control, as well as the math/simulation software; Mathworks – Matlab and Maplesoft – Maple.

Work Experience:
I am currently employed as a Process Operator I by Industrial Plant Services Limited on the M1 Methanol
Plant as of the 1st
December, 2012 to the present:
My work experience has so far taught me much about the workings of a process plant as well as the type of
attitude required with respect to efficiency and safety on a plant. I have gained experience managing and
monitoring all of the work activities that are conducted on the plant during a work day and logging their
progress while ensuring that safety standards are followed. I have been exposed to the workings and controls of
specialized equipment such as steam turbine gas compressors, positive displacement compressors and pumps,
centrifugal pumps, distillation columns (theory, design and controls), the Collect-Mix-Distribute (C.M.D.)
quench cooled reactor system, the Multi stage indirect cooling and Radial Flow (M.R.F.) reactor system, U-tube
and straight tube heat exchangers, and the auxiliary (fired) boiler system. I have been introduced to special
chemical processes such as cooling water treatment to prevent corrosion and degradation of heat exchangers, the
demineralization of boiler feed water to prevent scaling and degradation of heaters and boilers along with the
practice of Phosphate-pH control of boiler systems to maintain the integrity of boiler internal surfaces, the steam
and methane reforming process and the methanol synthesis processes. I have also been introduced to the
handling and storage practices for different types of chemicals such as concentrated H2SO4 (aq) and NaOH (aq),
water treatment chemicals such as sodium hypochlorite and the bulk storage of flammable substances
(methanol). I have through first-hand experience become better at trouble shooting problems that may arise
during plant processes such as for example identifying causes of pump inefficiencies such as cavitation, vapor
lock and bearing failure and addressing them in a timely manner.
Summer Internship at PCS Nitrogen Trinidad Limited:
I was employed at PCS Nitrogen Trinidad Limited as a Clerical Assistant for a period of six (6) weeks from the 1st
July to 30th
August, 2010. My main duties were updating the company’s warehouse inventory database and
assisting in the inventory management.
