This study assessed the awareness of nurses in primary healthcare units in Port Said, Egypt about vaccinations required for healthcare workers. It found that nurses had satisfactory knowledge about required vaccines but the majority had not received all vaccines, with only 86% receiving the hepatitis B vaccine and 72% receiving the influenza vaccine. When asked their opinions, 99% said vaccines are useful but only 50% knew the doses required. The study recommends that the Ministry of Health provide more vaccines for nurses and launch awareness campaigns to improve vaccination rates among nurses in Port Said.

A vaccine is a biological preparation that improves
immunity to a particular disease. A vaccine typically
contains an agent that resembles a disease-causing
microorganism, and is often made from weakened or
killed forms of the microbe, its toxins or one of its
surface proteins.
Nurses spend more time in close proximity to patients
than any other healthcare worker and seem to have the
highest risk of infection by a variety of pathogens.

Therefore; this study is aiming for assessing
awareness of nurses in primary healthcare
units of Port-Said about their required
vaccination and hoping to improve awareness
among unknowledgeable nurses.

Primary objectives
1) To assess awareness about vaccination for HCWs among nurses
in Port Said primary Healthcare Units.
2)To measure the prevalence of nurses in primary healthcare units
in Port Said who have been vaccinated by these vaccines.

Study Population: 115 nurses of Port-said primary health
care unites in 10 primary health care unites
Data Collection Tool: A structured interview questionnaire
which included
1) Socio-demographic data.
2) Questions that measured the knowledge of Nurses about
the vaccination for their job
3) Questions identified and measured the prevalence of the
nurses toward the vaccination .

Based on the results of our study; the nurses in Port Said
primary health care units have satisfied knowledge about
vaccines required for HCWs, but the majority of them
don’t receive all vaccines, Most of them (86%) take
Hepatitis B vaccines , (72%) of the participants take
influenza vaccine. In addition, other vaccines show
weakness attitude. When asked about their opinion about
vaccines , Almost all of the participants (99%) said that
vaccines are useful. Half of them (50%) know about doses
of each vaccines while others don’t know.
When we asked about their knowledge with patient, (90%)
of nurses wash their hands after giving vaccines. Many
participants (74%) chose awareness campaigns as the
major source of knowledge about vaccines.(77%)agreed
that The vaccines available are very carefully and
consistently tested for safety .(84%) agreed that Vaccines
are amongst the most effective forms of medical
treatment. (89%) agreed that The government should
invest more money in the development of vaccines .

Based on findings in this study, the following
recommendations are provided:
In order to improve practice and increase
knowledge among Port-Said nurses the Ministry of
Health should show more concerning with nurses
as they don’t receive all required vaccines. In
addition, it should provide and develop more
vaccines for nurses than it is found now.
More campaigns should be launched to increase
awareness and knowledge of nurses about the
importance of these vaccines to change this
negative attitude about being vaccinated or at least
reduce it.
