Message from the Capacity Building Regional Assistant
“Capacity is everything an organization needs to survive and thrive in pursuit of their goals,
whereas capacity building is a way of ensuring the creation, sustainability and continuity of
capacity”
Capacity building and training sessions are often not listed as priorities by our National
Member Organizations, however, once carefully thought about it, nothing appears more
evident than putting capacity building at the heart of all development strategies of our
associations, because with adequate capacity building comes better engagement of our
members, greater impact of our actions and longer sustainability for our associations.
One common mistake made is to mix capacity building up with training sessions. It is true that
training sessions are a core part of capacity building, however, capacity building is a
conceptual process which starts with identifying the obstacles faced by our members and
associations in their particular context and coming up with strategies to enhance and
strengthen their skills, competencies and abilities to achieve better results. The organization
of training sessions is therefore only one part of the whole process.
I wrote this manual after an original idea from Kathryn Gayle S. Quiwa, Capacity Building
Regional Assistant for Asia-Pacific for this term, and I tried as much as possible to adapt it to
our regional needs and context, while covering a wide range of activities and concepts.
I sincerely hope this manual will be useful for our region, and serve as a basis for each National
Member Organization to envision their own capacity building strategy and to get more
engaged and involved in the organization of capacity building and training workshops in the
local, national, and regional level.

IFMSA -- Who we are
The International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA), founded in 1951, is
one of the world’s oldest and largest student-run organizations. It represents, connects and
engages every day with medical students from 124 National Member Organizations (NMOs)
in 116 countries around the globe.
Our work is divided in four main global health areas: public health, sexual and reproductive
health, medical education, and human rights and peace.
Each year, we organize over 13,000 clinical and research exchanges programs for our
students to explore innovations in medicine, healthcare systems and healthcare delivery in
different settings.
IFMSA brings people together to exchange, discuss and initiate projects. It develops its
members’ skills and resources to become health leaders. It advocates for the pressing global
health issues to shape the world we want. And it does deliver: our projects, our campaigns
and our activities positively impact the physicians-to be, the communities they serve, as well
as the health systems around the world in which they practice as trainees and eventually
medical doctors.
IFMSA MISSION
" IFMSA unites medical students worldwide to lead initiatives that impact
positively the communities we serve. IFMSA represents the opinions and
ideas of future health professionals in the field of global health, and works
in collaboration with external partners. IFMSA builds capacity through
training, project and exchanges opportunities, while embracing cultural
diversity so as to shape a sustainable and healthy future."
IFMSA VISION
" A world in which all medical students unite for global health and are
equipped with the knowledge, skills and values to take on health leadership
roles locally and globally. "
The IFMSA is an independent, nongovernmental and non-political federation of medical
students’ associations throughout the world. It was founded in 1951 as an organization of
medical students, for medical students, and by medical students. For more than 60 years,
IFMSA was led and run by medical students worldwide. The Federation has not only been a
dynamic platform of opportunities for the future physicians but has also served as their voice
at the international level.
IFMSA is recognized as a non-governmental organization within the United Nations system
and the World Health Organization and works closely with the World Medical Association.
IFMSA was created to impact the world and to empower its members in taking their vision and
ideas, and making them a reality. IFMSA has inspired generations of medical students to
develop the leadership abilities and skills to take on challenges and to improve the world
around them in an early yet crucial period of their career. Engaging in IFMSA encourages both
professional and personal collaborations irrespective of geographical, social, cultural,
religious, racial, sexual and political differences. As a result, future doctors are becoming more
culturally aware and sensitive physicians.
The IFMSA experience shows students that they are not merely passive subjects in a rapidly
globalizing world but rather valuable individuals with a potentially powerful role to play in global
health. IFMSA hence offers medical students a taste of the real and pressing global health
issues worldwide, and helps them learn their idealistic goals can be achieved with readily
attainable knowledge and commitment.
In IFMSA, emphasis is placed on students returning to their local environments with new ideas
and skills to implement them. As the doctors of tomorrow and future leaders of health, we feel
confident that our students will carry this spirit with them throughout their professional lives so
they positively impact the communities they serve.
Objectives
• To expose medical students to humanitarian and global health issues, providing them
with the opportunity to educate themselves and their peers; to provide an international
framework in which medical student projects can be initiated, developed and implemented;
• To facilitate partnerships between the medical student community and international
organizations working on health, education and medicine; to empower and train medical
students to take a role in bringing about the necessary changes to improve the health of all
global citizens
• To give medical students the opportunity to take part in clinical and research exchanges
worldwide; thus providing a network that links active medical students across the globe

Training Sessions in IFMSA
“He who conquers himself is the mightiest warrior.” - Confucius
Training sessions are the backbone of IFMSA: they are the tool with which we exchange
experiences, acquire skills and build capacity in our organization.
Medical professionals are continually pressed to take on roles in management and
improvement of health systems worldwide. Therefore, development of key skills through
training is becoming increasingly important and IFMSA plays a significant role in developing
future leadership for global health. By offering training sessions from both in-house and
professional trainers, we aim to run workshops around the globe for IFMSA members. We
believe that training is a vital component of capacity building within IFMSA, providing NMOs
individuals and IFMSA project participants with the necessary skills and resources they need
to carry out their tasks, skills that classic academic medical curricula often fail to provide.
Throughout the years, we have been developing a high quality training curriculum and training
methods which have been passed on from generation to generation, hence allowing us to
constantly improve and develop our training workshops.
Capacity Building in IFMSA
Capacity building does not merely support what we do. It is what we do. Every single activity
in IFMSA aims to empower medical students from around the world to be agents of positive
change in their communities. It is during our projects, our training sessions, our activities, our
campaigns and our workshops that the magic happens.
Starting October 2015, the IFMSA Training Support Division will be moved
under the portfolio of the Vice-President for Capacity Building. With these
changes, we are confident we will be able to ensure a better representation of
Capacity Building and Programs in the strategic and executive decision making
with the ultimate goal of better aligning the strategic priorities of IFMSA with the
activities in our National Member Organizations.
During IFMSA Meetings, General
Assemblies, congresses, and
conferences, members have the
opportunity to be trained in many
different areas. Capacity building
allow us to empower our members
and find innovative ways to let their
voices be heard in order to facilitate
their roles as agents of change at
the local, national, regional and
international level. Our capacity building efforts offer an engaging opportunity to empower
members with the skills and confidence they need to efficiently carry out the tasks required in
each of the different standing committees and other relevant activities. This concrete and
hands-on approach has strengthened sentiments of common ownership among members,
and has allowed IFMSA to grow as an organization.
Peer-education is at the heart of IFMSA capacity building efforts, and as such, programs and
opportunities have been put in place to ensure that medical students are able to strengthen
their own skills by giving back to their peers.
For instance, an important
part of the IFMSA capacity
building program is the
“Training New Trainers
workshops” (TNT). During
this twenty-four-hours
workshop, medical students
are trained to become trainers
themselves. To ensure
continuity and keep trainers
motivated, the “Training Old
Trainers workshops” (TOT) have also been established. More recently, “Training of
Experienced Trainers” (TET) workshops have also been put in place, which are oriented on
even more specific skills based on specific needs of medical students.
Some examples of training topics are: Advocacy, Communication Skills, Conflict
Management, Facilitation Skills, Financial Management and Fundraising, Handover and
Continuity, Intercultural Learning, Leadership Skills, Motivation Skills, Negotiation Skills,
Project Management, Public Relations and Marketing, Time Management, and so on.
What Can You Do?
1. Develop and conduct local training sessions
• The first step would be the organization of training sessions and workshops for
your members locally based on their specific skill needs.
• Possible dates/times of the year for these training sessions may be:
• During your National or Local General Assemblies
• During a Pre-departure training for an IFMSA Meeting

effective in your work for your NMO and for IFMSA!
7. General Assembly Training Workshops
• Attend the General Assemblies and get the chance to learn about global health,
gain new skills, and share ideas and experiences with other medical students!
Local Training Sessions and Workshops in your NMOs
“There are three reasons I failed. Not enough training. Not enough training. And not enough
training.” - Haruki Murakami
The IFMSA, through its Team of Officials (TO) and its Capacity Building International Team
(formerly known as Training Support Division) organizes and delivers a handful of training
sessions and workshops during IFMSA General Assemblies each year. Similarly, the Regional
Team also provides such opportunities which are offered to our members in the Eastern
Mediterranean Region during the annual Eastern Mediterranean Regional Meeting (EMR).
While these opportunities offer a myriad of lifelong learning experiences to participating
students, not all are able to participate in these annual events due to several reasons. Given
this, we highly encourage NMOs of each country, through your own Team of Officials or
Executive Board and most especially through your Training Support Division or Capacity
Building Division (if you already have one), to develop programs and initiatives that will
extend training and skills development opportunities to your members locally. We also
recognize that members in each NMO have very specific demands and needs, therefore we
encourage NMOs to develop their own training programs, tailor-fit to what their members need.
In order to do this more effectively, the Capacity Building International Team and the Regional
Team, through the Regional Assistants, are very willing to help you activate or re-activate
your Capacity Building or Training Support Divisions and develop your training programs
locally. We are also developing training resources to address the needs of your members in
terms of skill and knowledge.
Activate your Capacity Building Division locally in your NMO now and start optimizing
your efforts to train your local members! For any assistance or guidance on how to do this,
do not hesitate to email me at ra.cb.emr@gmail.com
Sub-Regional Training Sessions
“Training enables self-confidence. Self-confidence enhances self-esteem. Self-esteem
ensures success adding value to organization” - Surendranath A.
An SRT is an international meeting supported by the IFMSA, where members and motivated
students from a specific region can meet and participate in training sessions, workshops and
small working groups. It can also be recognized as an IFMSA Activity.
SRTs and other IFMSA Activities are organized by an Organizing Committee (OC) within an
NMO. The OC is in charge to find boarding, lodging, coordinate training sessions and
workshops and organize a social program for all participants. The main objective of the SRT
is to improve the impact of IFMSA in the region by directly empowering its members.
Goals
1. Motivate participants and make them feel part of the IFMSA and their region;
2. Share experiences, projects, and innovative ideas;
3. Deliver training sessions in different topics;
4. Work together to solve problems that local and national officers might encounter through
Small Working Groups (SWG);
5. Find out ways of collaboration between NMOs in the region;
6. Have lots of fun!
Several SRTs have been organized so far, and these include, but are not limited, to the
following:
• International Peer Education Trainings (IPET/Advanced IPET)
• Training New Trainers, Training Old Trainers, Training Experienced Trainers
(TNT/TOT/TET)
• Training New Human Rights Trainers (TNHRT)
• Training Medical Education Trainers (TMET)
• Professional and Research Exchange Trainings (PRET) and Training New
Exchange Trainers (TNET)
• Global Health and/or Public Health Training
Why should you host or participate in an SRT?
SRTs and other activities are organized to provide members that did not have the opportunity
to attend an IFMSA General Assembly or Regional Meeting (for example due to limited
delegation spots, funding or leave of absence) with another opportunity to join the capacity
building opportunities that are offered. These training sessions also enable NMOs within a
specific part of the region that may encounter the same challenges to work together so they
can share experiences.
How can you host an SRT?
File an application form as an IFMSA Activity (Download the Activity Form and Activity Cycle
here: (http://tinyurl.com/h66rryh) and IFMSA will provide all the help and support that your
NMO needs.
IFMSA will help you in the following:
1. An official will be appointed as your contact person for questions or support that you need,
to oversee your SRT, help you in the preparation and follow-up
2. Help in developing the agenda of the SRT
3. Help in finding IFMSA trainers
4. Templates of budget/financial requirements
5. Access to archived information and material for training sessions
6. Promotion of your event through the official IFMSA channels and website
7. Invitation of externals for the event
However, any event that is organized by one or several NMOs together that serves the goals
mentioned above and applies to the needs of the region can apply to become an SRT. A good
reference on how you can better propose and plan for an SRT could be the numerous Pre-
GA and Pre-Regional Meeting proposals, which can also be hosted as separate events.
1. Volunteer to host an SRT in your NMO and get the chance to organize training sessions
for and welcome medical students from Eastern Mediterranean Region and all over the
world! Email ra.cb.emr@gmail.com for more details 
Training New Trainers (TNT)
“No one learns as much about a subject as one who is forced to teach it.”- Peter F. Drucker
The TNT Workshop is made for IFMSA members interested in personal development with the
desire to help others to learn and willing to become actively involved in capacity building by
providing educational activities on different topics to their peers. Through non-formal
education, the TNT Workshop aims to give participants the tools and skills needed to speak
before an audience, to listen to others and the ability to plan and implement training sessions
while being flexible and easily adapting to the needs of the group.
The workshop should comprise at least 24 working hours, not exceeding more than 10 hours
per day; time in which the participants will complete approximately 13 training sessions with
various types of content
Objectives of the TNT Workshop
IFMSA is an organization which depends mainly on its members, making capacity building
and non-formal education essential ways to meet its needs, vision and mission. Therefore,
some of the main objectives of the TNT workshop are the following:
Objective 1: Developing participants’ basic knowledge and skills on personal development and
project management areas
Objective 2: Providing participants with insight on training sessions design and delivery
frameworks, enabling them to prepare and deliver impactful and high-quality training sessions
Objective 3: Building up competent IFMSA Trainers and preparing them to occupy more
responsible positions within their NMO and IFMSA.
Organize your own TNT in your NMO! For more information on how to organize a TNT,
email me at ra.cb.emr@gmail.com
Training Old Trainers (TOT)
“In most of the training courses I run, I ask the question “where does knowledge come from?”
Always, every time, I get the answer “Experience – Knowledge comes from
Experience”. Never does anyone answer “Knowledge comes from Information”. Never
If you don’t believe me, try it yourself. Ask people “where does knowledge come from”? and
see what they say.” - Nick Milton
The TOT Workshop is made for experienced IFMSA Trainers interested in further developing
their inter-personal skills and willing to connect and share their experiences and best practices
with other motivated IFMSA Trainers. Through review and transfer of experience, and further
non-formal education, the TOT Workshop aims to give participants practical knowledge to
increase their motivation and engagement as IFMSA Trainers.
The workshop should comprise at least 24 working hours, not exceeding more than 10 hours
per day; time in which the participants will complete approximately 13 training sessions with
various types of content
Objectives of the TOT Workshop
Some of the main objectives of the TOT workshop are the following:
Objective 1: Developing participants’ in-depth knowledge and skills on personal development
and project management areas
Objective 2: Providing participants with greater insight on training sessions design and delivery
frameworks, enabling them to improve the way they prepare and deliver their training sessions
by sharing their experience
Objective 3: Building up competent IFMSA Trainers and preparing them to organize and
deliver TNT Workshops
Organize your own TOT in your NMO! For more information on how to organize a TOT,

Pre-Regional Meeting Workshops
Participate in Pre-Regional Meeting Workshops
During the annual Eastern Mediterranean Regional Meeting (EMR), the host country
organizes a Pre-EMR event that runs for three days immediately before the EMR. During this
event, participants undergo intensive training and fun workshops prepared and given by skilled
trainers and IFMSA officials.
Each year, the EMR Organizing Committee opens a limited number of slots for participants
who wish to learn medical, non-medical, and technical skills. The group of participants is
purposely kept small in number to ensure the high-quality experience and to maintain the
impact of the workshops.
Create a workshop proposal and get the chance to conduct your workshop during Pre-
EMR!
The Regional Director makes the call for proposals for pre-EMR workshops five (5) months
before the scheduled EMR. The Regional Director, in cooperation with the Regional Team,
will then evaluate the proposals and select the pre-EMR workshop topics according to the
quality of submissions.
The Regional Director will inform all proponents of the selected workshops no later than one
week after the late registration deadline regarding the approval of their proposed workshop.
The proposers/facilitators are then required to coordinate with the Organizing Committee
regarding the materials and logistical requirements of their respective workshops.
Propose a Pre-RM workshop for the upcoming EMR Meeting!
For more information or any assistance to accomplish your Pre-RM workshop proposal, email
me at ra.cb.emr@gmail.com
Pre-General Assembly Workshops
Participate in Pre-GA Workshops
Before each IFMSA General Assembly (March Meeting and August Meeting), the Organizing
Committee of the host country prepares a three-day training workshop for participants who
want to improve their skills and broaden their knowledge on specific topics, including sessions
on climate change and health, IFMSA external representation, comprehensive sexual
education, access to safe abortions, migrants’ health, food and health, alcohol policy, global
surgery, medical education, and soft-skills.
Create a workshop proposal and get the chance to conduct your workshop during the
Pre-GA
Any group of enthusiastic members who are attending the March or August Meeting with a
shared interest and a great idea can apply to conduct a Pre-GA workshop. The Team of
Officials calls for applications for Pre-GA workshops five months prior to the General
Assembly. Following the submission of workshop proposals, all proposals will be gathered
and reviewed. Each applying NMO/group’s proposal will be assessed in terms of the required
titles specified in the general guidelines (please refer to the Call Document sent via email to
the IFMSA Mailing Lists) and scored accordingly. Finally, the announcement will be made over
the Mailing Lists to start the preparations for the participants’ registration and application.
Propose a Pre-GA workshop for the upcoming March/August Meeting!
For more information or assistance to accomplish your Pre-GA workshop proposal, email me
at ra.cb.emr@gmail.com
General Assembly Training Sessions
IFMSA General Assemblies are among the biggest youth-led events around the world. Held
twice a year – once in March, once in August, they are attended by over 800 medical students
from more than 100 countries. The IFMSA General Assemblies hope to inspire the next
generation of future physicians to become leaders and advocates through exchange of ideas,
networking and learning from various sessions on health topics.
They feature namely: meetings of each Standing Committee; governance and decision-
making sessions; training opportunities for self-skills development; inspiring activities and
projects presentations. Graced by the largest number of medical students from all over the
world, the GA Training Sessions are given and delivered by the best of the best trainers who
are carefully selected by the OC and the Team of Officials led by the Vice-President for
Capacity Building.

  • 3. Message from the Capacity Building Regional Assistant “Capacity is everything an organization needs to survive and thrive in pursuit of their goals, whereas capacity building is a way of ensuring the creation, sustainability and continuity of capacity” Capacity building and training sessions are often not listed as priorities by our National Member Organizations, however, once carefully thought about it, nothing appears more evident than putting capacity building at the heart of all development strategies of our associations, because with adequate capacity building comes better engagement of our members, greater impact of our actions and longer sustainability for our associations. One common mistake made is to mix capacity building up with training sessions. It is true that training sessions are a core part of capacity building, however, capacity building is a conceptual process which starts with identifying the obstacles faced by our members and associations in their particular context and coming up with strategies to enhance and strengthen their skills, competencies and abilities to achieve better results. The organization of training sessions is therefore only one part of the whole process. I wrote this manual after an original idea from Kathryn Gayle S. Quiwa, Capacity Building Regional Assistant for Asia-Pacific for this term, and I tried as much as possible to adapt it to our regional needs and context, while covering a wide range of activities and concepts. I sincerely hope this manual will be useful for our region, and serve as a basis for each National Member Organization to envision their own capacity building strategy and to get more engaged and involved in the organization of capacity building and training workshops in the local, national, and regional level. • 4. IFMSA -- Who we are The International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA), founded in 1951, is one of the world’s oldest and largest student-run organizations. It represents, connects and engages every day with medical students from 124 National Member Organizations (NMOs) in 116 countries around the globe. Our work is divided in four main global health areas: public health, sexual and reproductive health, medical education, and human rights and peace. Each year, we organize over 13,000 clinical and research exchanges programs for our students to explore innovations in medicine, healthcare systems and healthcare delivery in different settings. IFMSA brings people together to exchange, discuss and initiate projects. It develops its members’ skills and resources to become health leaders. It advocates for the pressing global health issues to shape the world we want. And it does deliver: our projects, our campaigns and our activities positively impact the physicians-to be, the communities they serve, as well as the health systems around the world in which they practice as trainees and eventually medical doctors. IFMSA MISSION " IFMSA unites medical students worldwide to lead initiatives that impact positively the communities we serve. IFMSA represents the opinions and ideas of future health professionals in the field of global health, and works in collaboration with external partners. IFMSA builds capacity through training, project and exchanges opportunities, while embracing cultural diversity so as to shape a sustainable and healthy future." IFMSA VISION " A world in which all medical students unite for global health and are equipped with the knowledge, skills and values to take on health leadership roles locally and globally. "
  • 5. The IFMSA is an independent, nongovernmental and non-political federation of medical students’ associations throughout the world. It was founded in 1951 as an organization of medical students, for medical students, and by medical students. For more than 60 years, IFMSA was led and run by medical students worldwide. The Federation has not only been a dynamic platform of opportunities for the future physicians but has also served as their voice at the international level. IFMSA is recognized as a non-governmental organization within the United Nations system and the World Health Organization and works closely with the World Medical Association. IFMSA was created to impact the world and to empower its members in taking their vision and ideas, and making them a reality. IFMSA has inspired generations of medical students to develop the leadership abilities and skills to take on challenges and to improve the world around them in an early yet crucial period of their career. Engaging in IFMSA encourages both professional and personal collaborations irrespective of geographical, social, cultural, religious, racial, sexual and political differences. As a result, future doctors are becoming more culturally aware and sensitive physicians. The IFMSA experience shows students that they are not merely passive subjects in a rapidly globalizing world but rather valuable individuals with a potentially powerful role to play in global health. IFMSA hence offers medical students a taste of the real and pressing global health issues worldwide, and helps them learn their idealistic goals can be achieved with readily attainable knowledge and commitment. In IFMSA, emphasis is placed on students returning to their local environments with new ideas and skills to implement them. As the doctors of tomorrow and future leaders of health, we feel confident that our students will carry this spirit with them throughout their professional lives so they positively impact the communities they serve. Objectives • To expose medical students to humanitarian and global health issues, providing them with the opportunity to educate themselves and their peers; to provide an international framework in which medical student projects can be initiated, developed and implemented; • To facilitate partnerships between the medical student community and international organizations working on health, education and medicine; to empower and train medical students to take a role in bringing about the necessary changes to improve the health of all global citizens • To give medical students the opportunity to take part in clinical and research exchanges worldwide; thus providing a network that links active medical students across the globe
  • 6. 5 | P a g e Training Sessions in IFMSA “He who conquers himself is the mightiest warrior.” - Confucius Training sessions are the backbone of IFMSA: they are the tool with which we exchange experiences, acquire skills and build capacity in our organization. Medical professionals are continually pressed to take on roles in management and improvement of health systems worldwide. Therefore, development of key skills through training is becoming increasingly important and IFMSA plays a significant role in developing future leadership for global health. By offering training sessions from both in-house and professional trainers, we aim to run workshops around the globe for IFMSA members. We believe that training is a vital component of capacity building within IFMSA, providing NMOs individuals and IFMSA project participants with the necessary skills and resources they need to carry out their tasks, skills that classic academic medical curricula often fail to provide. Throughout the years, we have been developing a high quality training curriculum and training methods which have been passed on from generation to generation, hence allowing us to constantly improve and develop our training workshops.
  • 7. Capacity Building in IFMSA Capacity building does not merely support what we do. It is what we do. Every single activity in IFMSA aims to empower medical students from around the world to be agents of positive change in their communities. It is during our projects, our training sessions, our activities, our campaigns and our workshops that the magic happens. Starting October 2015, the IFMSA Training Support Division will be moved under the portfolio of the Vice-President for Capacity Building. With these changes, we are confident we will be able to ensure a better representation of Capacity Building and Programs in the strategic and executive decision making with the ultimate goal of better aligning the strategic priorities of IFMSA with the activities in our National Member Organizations.
  • 8. During IFMSA Meetings, General Assemblies, congresses, and conferences, members have the opportunity to be trained in many different areas. Capacity building allow us to empower our members and find innovative ways to let their voices be heard in order to facilitate their roles as agents of change at the local, national, regional and international level. Our capacity building efforts offer an engaging opportunity to empower members with the skills and confidence they need to efficiently carry out the tasks required in each of the different standing committees and other relevant activities. This concrete and hands-on approach has strengthened sentiments of common ownership among members, and has allowed IFMSA to grow as an organization. Peer-education is at the heart of IFMSA capacity building efforts, and as such, programs and opportunities have been put in place to ensure that medical students are able to strengthen their own skills by giving back to their peers. For instance, an important part of the IFMSA capacity building program is the “Training New Trainers workshops” (TNT). During this twenty-four-hours workshop, medical students are trained to become trainers themselves. To ensure continuity and keep trainers motivated, the “Training Old Trainers workshops” (TOT) have also been established. More recently, “Training of Experienced Trainers” (TET) workshops have also been put in place, which are oriented on even more specific skills based on specific needs of medical students.
  • 9. Some examples of training topics are: Advocacy, Communication Skills, Conflict Management, Facilitation Skills, Financial Management and Fundraising, Handover and Continuity, Intercultural Learning, Leadership Skills, Motivation Skills, Negotiation Skills, Project Management, Public Relations and Marketing, Time Management, and so on. What Can You Do? 1. Develop and conduct local training sessions • The first step would be the organization of training sessions and workshops for your members locally based on their specific skill needs. • Possible dates/times of the year for these training sessions may be: • During your National or Local General Assemblies • During a Pre-departure training for an IFMSA Meeting Capacity Building Local Trainings Sub- Regional Trainings TNT TOT Pre-GA Pre-RM
  • 10. • At the start of each term • Do not hesitate to coordinate with us (through your Regional Assistant) for ideas on topics and assistance in searching for trainers. If you have come up with new ideas and creative ways of conducting your training sessions, tell us about it! 2. Sub-Regional Training (SRT) • Encourage members of your NMO to participate in SRTs and become IFMSA- certified trainers! There are always new opportunities to be found on the IFMSA Mailing Lists or Facebook groups. • Host an SRT in your NMO 3. Training New Trainers (TNT) • Organize a TNT in your NMO for your motivated members to become IFMSA- certified trainers! 4. Training Old Trainers (TOT) • Organize a TOT in your NMO for your IFMSA Trainers to keep them up-to-date and motivated! 5. Pre-Regional Meeting (RM) Workshops • Participate in Pre-Regional Meetings and learn about advocacy skills and various aspects of leadership and management. • Propose and suggest topic ideas and training agendas for the Pre-Regional Meeting workshops! 6. Pre-General Assembly (GA) Training Workshops • Participate in Pre-General Assemblies and be trained by experienced IFMSA trainers from all around the world • Learn the basics and advanced skills you will need to become more efficient and effective in your work for your NMO and for IFMSA! 7. General Assembly Training Workshops • Attend the General Assemblies and get the chance to learn about global health, gain new skills, and share ideas and experiences with other medical students!
  • 11. Local Training Sessions and Workshops in your NMOs “There are three reasons I failed. Not enough training. Not enough training. And not enough training.” - Haruki Murakami The IFMSA, through its Team of Officials (TO) and its Capacity Building International Team (formerly known as Training Support Division) organizes and delivers a handful of training sessions and workshops during IFMSA General Assemblies each year. Similarly, the Regional Team also provides such opportunities which are offered to our members in the Eastern Mediterranean Region during the annual Eastern Mediterranean Regional Meeting (EMR). While these opportunities offer a myriad of lifelong learning experiences to participating students, not all are able to participate in these annual events due to several reasons. Given this, we highly encourage NMOs of each country, through your own Team of Officials or Executive Board and most especially through your Training Support Division or Capacity Building Division (if you already have one), to develop programs and initiatives that will extend training and skills development opportunities to your members locally. We also recognize that members in each NMO have very specific demands and needs, therefore we encourage NMOs to develop their own training programs, tailor-fit to what their members need.
  • 12. In order to do this more effectively, the Capacity Building International Team and the Regional Team, through the Regional Assistants, are very willing to help you activate or re-activate your Capacity Building or Training Support Divisions and develop your training programs locally. We are also developing training resources to address the needs of your members in terms of skill and knowledge. Activate your Capacity Building Division locally in your NMO now and start optimizing your efforts to train your local members! For any assistance or guidance on how to do this, do not hesitate to email me at ra.cb.emr@gmail.com
  • 13. Sub-Regional Training Sessions “Training enables self-confidence. Self-confidence enhances self-esteem. Self-esteem ensures success adding value to organization” - Surendranath A. An SRT is an international meeting supported by the IFMSA, where members and motivated students from a specific region can meet and participate in training sessions, workshops and small working groups. It can also be recognized as an IFMSA Activity. SRTs and other IFMSA Activities are organized by an Organizing Committee (OC) within an NMO. The OC is in charge to find boarding, lodging, coordinate training sessions and workshops and organize a social program for all participants. The main objective of the SRT is to improve the impact of IFMSA in the region by directly empowering its members. Goals 1. Motivate participants and make them feel part of the IFMSA and their region; 2. Share experiences, projects, and innovative ideas;
  • 14. 3. Deliver training sessions in different topics; 4. Work together to solve problems that local and national officers might encounter through Small Working Groups (SWG); 5. Find out ways of collaboration between NMOs in the region; 6. Have lots of fun! Several SRTs have been organized so far, and these include, but are not limited, to the following: • International Peer Education Trainings (IPET/Advanced IPET) • Training New Trainers, Training Old Trainers, Training Experienced Trainers (TNT/TOT/TET) • Training New Human Rights Trainers (TNHRT) • Training Medical Education Trainers (TMET) • Professional and Research Exchange Trainings (PRET) and Training New Exchange Trainers (TNET) • Global Health and/or Public Health Training
  • 15. Why should you host or participate in an SRT? SRTs and other activities are organized to provide members that did not have the opportunity to attend an IFMSA General Assembly or Regional Meeting (for example due to limited delegation spots, funding or leave of absence) with another opportunity to join the capacity building opportunities that are offered. These training sessions also enable NMOs within a specific part of the region that may encounter the same challenges to work together so they can share experiences. How can you host an SRT? File an application form as an IFMSA Activity (Download the Activity Form and Activity Cycle here: (http://tinyurl.com/h66rryh) and IFMSA will provide all the help and support that your NMO needs. IFMSA will help you in the following: 1. An official will be appointed as your contact person for questions or support that you need, to oversee your SRT, help you in the preparation and follow-up 2. Help in developing the agenda of the SRT 3. Help in finding IFMSA trainers 4. Templates of budget/financial requirements 5. Access to archived information and material for training sessions 6. Promotion of your event through the official IFMSA channels and website 7. Invitation of externals for the event However, any event that is organized by one or several NMOs together that serves the goals mentioned above and applies to the needs of the region can apply to become an SRT. A good reference on how you can better propose and plan for an SRT could be the numerous Pre- GA and Pre-Regional Meeting proposals, which can also be hosted as separate events. 1. Volunteer to host an SRT in your NMO and get the chance to organize training sessions for and welcome medical students from Eastern Mediterranean Region and all over the world! Email ra.cb.emr@gmail.com for more details 
  • 16. Training New Trainers (TNT) “No one learns as much about a subject as one who is forced to teach it.”- Peter F. Drucker The TNT Workshop is made for IFMSA members interested in personal development with the desire to help others to learn and willing to become actively involved in capacity building by providing educational activities on different topics to their peers. Through non-formal education, the TNT Workshop aims to give participants the tools and skills needed to speak before an audience, to listen to others and the ability to plan and implement training sessions while being flexible and easily adapting to the needs of the group. The workshop should comprise at least 24 working hours, not exceeding more than 10 hours per day; time in which the participants will complete approximately 13 training sessions with various types of content
  • 17. Objectives of the TNT Workshop IFMSA is an organization which depends mainly on its members, making capacity building and non-formal education essential ways to meet its needs, vision and mission. Therefore, some of the main objectives of the TNT workshop are the following: Objective 1: Developing participants’ basic knowledge and skills on personal development and project management areas Objective 2: Providing participants with insight on training sessions design and delivery frameworks, enabling them to prepare and deliver impactful and high-quality training sessions Objective 3: Building up competent IFMSA Trainers and preparing them to occupy more responsible positions within their NMO and IFMSA. Organize your own TNT in your NMO! For more information on how to organize a TNT, email me at ra.cb.emr@gmail.com
  • 18. Training Old Trainers (TOT) “In most of the training courses I run, I ask the question “where does knowledge come from?” Always, every time, I get the answer “Experience – Knowledge comes from Experience”. Never does anyone answer “Knowledge comes from Information”. Never If you don’t believe me, try it yourself. Ask people “where does knowledge come from”? and see what they say.” - Nick Milton The TOT Workshop is made for experienced IFMSA Trainers interested in further developing their inter-personal skills and willing to connect and share their experiences and best practices with other motivated IFMSA Trainers. Through review and transfer of experience, and further non-formal education, the TOT Workshop aims to give participants practical knowledge to increase their motivation and engagement as IFMSA Trainers. The workshop should comprise at least 24 working hours, not exceeding more than 10 hours per day; time in which the participants will complete approximately 13 training sessions with various types of content
  • 19. Objectives of the TOT Workshop Some of the main objectives of the TOT workshop are the following: Objective 1: Developing participants’ in-depth knowledge and skills on personal development and project management areas Objective 2: Providing participants with greater insight on training sessions design and delivery frameworks, enabling them to improve the way they prepare and deliver their training sessions by sharing their experience Objective 3: Building up competent IFMSA Trainers and preparing them to organize and deliver TNT Workshops Organize your own TOT in your NMO! • 20. Pre-Regional Meeting Workshops Participate in Pre-Regional Meeting Workshops During the annual Eastern Mediterranean Regional Meeting (EMR), the host country organizes a Pre-EMR event that runs for three days immediately before the EMR. During this event, participants undergo intensive training and fun workshops prepared and given by skilled trainers and IFMSA officials. Each year, the EMR Organizing Committee opens a limited number of slots for participants who wish to learn medical, non-medical, and technical skills. The group of participants is purposely kept small in number to ensure the high-quality experience and to maintain the impact of the workshops.
  • 21. Create a workshop proposal and get the chance to conduct your workshop during Pre- EMR! The Regional Director makes the call for proposals for pre-EMR workshops five (5) months before the scheduled EMR. The Regional Director, in cooperation with the Regional Team, will then evaluate the proposals and select the pre-EMR workshop topics according to the quality of submissions. The Regional Director will inform all proponents of the selected workshops no later than one week after the late registration deadline regarding the approval of their proposed workshop. The proposers/facilitators are then required to coordinate with the Organizing Committee regarding the materials and logistical requirements of their respective workshops. Propose a Pre-RM workshop for the upcoming EMR Meeting! For more information or any assistance to accomplish your Pre-RM workshop proposal, email me at ra.cb.emr@gmail.com
  • 22. Pre-General Assembly Workshops Participate in Pre-GA Workshops Before each IFMSA General Assembly (March Meeting and August Meeting), the Organizing Committee of the host country prepares a three-day training workshop for participants who want to improve their skills and broaden their knowledge on specific topics, including sessions on climate change and health, IFMSA external representation, comprehensive sexual education, access to safe abortions, migrants’ health, food and health, alcohol policy, global surgery, medical education, and soft-skills. Create a workshop proposal and get the chance to conduct your workshop during the Pre-GA Any group of enthusiastic members who are attending the March or August Meeting with a shared interest and a great idea can apply to conduct a Pre-GA workshop. The Team of Officials calls for applications for Pre-GA workshops five months prior to the General Assembly. Following the submission of workshop proposals, all proposals will be gathered
  • 23. and reviewed. Each applying NMO/group’s proposal will be assessed in terms of the required titles specified in the general guidelines (please refer to the Call Document sent via email to the IFMSA Mailing Lists) and scored accordingly. Finally, the announcement will be made over the Mailing Lists to start the preparations for the participants’ registration and application. Propose a Pre-GA workshop for the upcoming March/August Meeting! For more information or assistance to accomplish your Pre-GA workshop proposal, email me at ra.cb.emr@gmail.com General Assembly Training Sessions IFMSA General Assemblies are among the biggest youth-led events around the world.
