2. Introduction
โข A genital injury is an injury to male or female sex organs, mainly those
outside the body. It also refers to injury in the area between the legs,
called the perineum.
โข Injury to the genitals can be very painful. It may cause a lot of bleeding.
Such injury can affect the reproductive organs and the bladder and
urethra.
โข Damage may be temporary or permanent.
PRESENTATION TITLE 2
4. INTRODUCTION
โข Injuries to the male genitalia can be caused by a variety of
factors, including sports-related injuries, accidents, and
sexual trauma.
โข The severity of the injury can range from minor cuts and
bruises to more serious injuries such as penile fractures or
testicular torsion.
RAJAH, A.S 4
5. INTRODUCTION
โข Male genital problems and injuries can occur fairly easily
since the scrotum and penis are not protected by bones.
Genital problems and injuries most commonly occur during:
โข Sports or recreational activities, such as mountain biking, soccer, or
baseball.
โข Work-related tasks, such as exposure to irritating chemicals.
โข Falls.
โข Sexual activity.
RAJAH, A.S 5
7. PENILE FRACTURE
โข A penile fracture occurs when the penis is forcefully bent or
snapped during an erection.
โข Penile fractures typically occur during intercourse and result
in a cracking sound, immediate pain, marked penile swelling
and ecchymosis, and usually a visible deformity.
โข This injury can cause a popping sound or sensation, severe
pain, swelling, and bruising.
โข It requires immediate medical attention to avoid permanent
damage to the penis.
RAJAH, A.S 7
8. TESTICULAR TORSION
โข Testicular torsion occurs when the spermatic
cord that holds the testicles in place becomes
twisted, cutting off blood supply to the testicle.
โข This condition is also a medical emergency that
requires immediate treatment to avoid
permanent damage to the testicle.
RAJAH, A.S 8
9. ZIPPER INJURY
โข The foreskin or skin on the penis can get caught on a
zipper.
โข Typically, zipper injuries occur in young children who are
dressing and zipping while paying attention to
something else.
โข Injuries to the penis from zipper entrapment are actually
the most common cause of penile trauma in adults, with
roughly 2,000 reported cases yearly.
RAJAH, A.S 9
10. ZIPPER INJURY
โข This results in direct tissue damage to the foreskin or
penile skin from compression and entrapment.
โข The injury may demonstrate bleeding, swelling, pain,
contusions, bruising, and other signs of tissue damage.
โข In general, the longer the tissue is trapped, the greater
the degree of tissue damage, edema, bruising, scarring,
and trauma.
โข Therefore, the conditions should be relieved as quickly
as reasonably possible.
RAJAH, A.S 10
11. ZIPPER INJURY
โข To remove a zipper, inject local anesthetic into
the area.
โข Lubricate the zipper with mineral oil and then
make one attempt to unzip the zipper.
โข If this attempt is unsuccessful, use a sturdy
wire cutter (diagonal cutter) to cut the median
bar on the top of the zipper slider, which
connects its front and back plates.
โข Then the slider falls off in 2 pieces, and the
zipper teeth come apart readily
RAJAH, A.S 11
12. RUPTURED TESTICLE
โข A direct blow to the scrotum can also cause a tear of the
capsule around the testicle.
โข To save the testicle, this needs emergency surgery. This can
happen from a kick to the groin.
โข The main symptom is severe pain and a swollen scrotum.
RAJAH, A.S 12
13. STRADDLE INJURY
โข An injury to the groin from falling on an object that is
being straddled.
โข Examples are playground equipment, crossbars of a
bike, or a fence.
โข In boys with a straddle injury, the urethra can be
bruised or torn.
โข A symptom of a damaged urethra is blood at the penis
opening. Other findings are bloody urine, trouble
starting the stream or pain when passing urine.
RAJAH, A.S 13
14. PENILE AMPUTATIONS
โข penile amputation is a urological emergency, which can be
due to self-infliction as seen in psychiatric patients
responding to command hallucination, or it can be from
industrial accidents or assaults, and rarely from circumcision
mishaps.
โข Penile amputation can be devastating to the patient, his
spouse, and his relatives, and very tasking to the urologist,
especially when the patient requires reimplantation of the
penis and the stump was brought late after 24 h, and
unpreserved.
RAJAH, A.S 14
15. PENILE AMPUTATIONS
โข The blood loss can be severe requiring resuscitation with
intravenous fluids, and blood transfusion may be necessary
in some patients.
โข In shocked patient, there will be the need to control active
bleeding and adequate analgesia is necessary because of
pain.
โข The anatomical location of the penis makes it vulnerable to
trauma, and the fact that men are more likely to participate in
physical and contact sports, violence, and exposure to
industrial accidents.
RAJAH, A.S 15
18. Introduction
โข Injuries to the female genitalia can occur due to a variety of reasons
such as accidents, childbirth, sexual trauma, or medical conditions.
โข Most women experience minor vaginal injuries from time to time.
PRESENTATION TITLE 18
20. Lacerations
โข This is a discontinuity of the epidermis and dermis caused by
blunt force such as tearing, crushing, or overstretching
โข Vaginal lacerations include disruption of the vaginal floor and
side walls
โข Vulvar lacerations include periurethral, periclitoral, or labial
tears within the introitus.
RAJAH, A.S 20
21. Abrasion
โข A traumatic exposure of lower epidermis or upper dermis
typically caused by lateral rubbing or sliding against the skin
tangentially rather than vertically, characterized by the
outermost layer of skin being scraped away from deeper
layers.
RAJAH, A.S 21
23. FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM)
โข Female Genital Mutilation comprises all procedures involving
the removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to
the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
โข Most often, FGM is practiced on girls and young women
under 18.
โข FGM is not prescribed by any religion and has no health
benefits.
โข On the contrary the practice can cause life-lasting physical
and psychological trauma.
RAJAH, A.S 23
24. FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM)
โข Type 1: Also known as clitoridectomy, this type consists of partial or
total removal of the external part of the clitoris and/or its prepuce
(clitoral hood).
โข Type 2: Also known as excision, the external part of clitoris and labia
minora are partially or totally removed, with or without excision of the
labia majora.
โข Type 3: It is also known as infibulation or pharaonic type. The
procedure consists of narrowing the vaginal orifice with creation of a
covering seal by cutting and appositioning the labia minora and/or labia
majora, with or without removal of the external part of clitoris.
โข Type 4: This type consists of all other procedures to the genitalia of
women for non-medical purposes, such as pricking, piercing, incising,
scraping and cauterization
RAJAH, A.S 24
26. INJURIES FROM SEXUAL CAUSES
โข sexual violence, including sexual abuse and assault
โข consensual sexual activity, including with use of sexual aids
RAJAH, A.S 26
27. OTHER INJURIES
โข Bruises
โข Contusions
โข Hematomas
These are traumatic extravasation of blood in tissues below an
intact epidermis caused by blunt force
RAJAH, A.S 27
28. COMPLICATIONS OF GENITAL INJURIES
โข Complications of genital injuries include:
โข Infection
โข Necrotizing infections such as Fournier gangrene
โข Tissue loss
โข Erectile dysfunction
โข Male hypogonadism
โข Urethral scarring.
โข Septic Shock
