AN OPPORTUNITY TO HELP
AND HEAL MORE PEOPLE THAN
EVER BEFORE
Nobody wants to visit an emergency room, but more than likely, it’s something
that will affect us all. When it happens, the last thing we’ll want to worry about
is the wait time. Or our privacy. Or the possibility of transfer to another health
care facility.
When it happens, we should receive nothing less than the best possible care,
from the best possible specialists, in the best possible place. So we can stay
focused on what matters most: getting better.
At the Borgess Level I Emergency & Trauma Center, our goal has always been
to help our patients get better, as fast and efficiently as possible. Treating more
than 40,000 individuals every year, our Center combines leading experts and
state-of-the-art technology to deliver precisely what patients need – when
moments count. Designated as Level I by the American College of Surgeons,
we are equipped to handle the most severe illnesses and injuries.
But while we are proud of the emergency and trauma services we’ve provided
our community, we feel that improvements can, and should, be made.
Renovating and expanding our Level I Emergency & Trauma Center – as well
as upgrading key diagnostic technologies – will give our patients what they
deserve: care that is private, care that is safe and care that is exceptional. By
participating in the Habitat for Healing Campaign, you can enable us to reach
these important objectives.
To discover how you can make a difference, please take a few moments to read
on and learn more about our campaign. Working together, we can help and
heal more people than ever before.
“Giving to the Habitat for Healing Campaign will
not only help us renovate our Level I Emergency & Trauma Center
and add new technology; it will also allow us to build a care environment
that's more secure, comfortable and conducive to healing.”
– John Lawrence, Board of Directors, Borgess Foundation
PRESERVING THE HEALTH OF OUR
COMMUNITY, RESTORING THE
HEALTH OF OUR PATIENTS
Every new era in the health care industry brings
change with it – changes in technology, changes
in reimbursement, changes in regulations. At
Borgess, we understand that regardless of the
challenges we face, these changes must be endured
for our community to stay vibrant and healthy.
Transforming our Level I Emergency & Trauma Center will allow us to keep
pace with the growing emergency and trauma demands of our community,
and most importantly, put our patients first. With funding from the Habitat for
Healing Campaign, we plan to expand the
overall emergency and trauma depart-
ment, convert curtain treatment bays to
private rooms, and add a new fast-track
area for more streamlined treatment of
urgent care patients.
Greater confidentiality, improved safety,
increased comfort and peace of mind. A
revitalized Borgess Level I Emergency &
Trauma Center will ensure that we meet
these crucial patient needs – now and in
the years ahead.
“Curtain treatment bays met previous standards for emergency care delivery,
but today, patients expect private, individual rooms.
Renovating the Level I Emergency & Trauma Center will help us
successfully meet this expectation.”
– Steven Kujacznski, DO, Medical Director, Borgess Level I Emergency & Trauma Center
SUPPORTING THE LATEST IN
DIAGNOSTIC TECHNOLOGY
When it comes to offering the
best treatment approach, an
accurate diagnosis is essential.
That’s why we’re dedicated to
providing the most precise
diagnostic technology available.
Should our emergency and trauma
patients require a computerized tomography (CT) scan or other diagnostic testing,
they’re only one private hallway away from our state-of-the-art radiology depart-
ment, housed within the new Stryker Center.
In addition to the renovation of the Borgess Level I Emergency & Trauma Center,
the Habitat for Healing Campaign will support enhanced diagnostic capabilities,
including our new 64-slice CT scanner. While current CT scanners are adequate for
many applications, 64-slice CT scanners produce higher-quality images within five
to 10 seconds, enabling certain conditions to be more quickly and thoroughly diag-
nosed. For those with heart disease, the new scanner delivers improved images of
the coronary arteries, potentially eliminating the need for more invasive testing.
Complementing our 64-slice CT scanner, a new Women’s Diagnostic Center is
also in the works. Located in our Medical Specialties Building, the Center will
offer increased access to a variety of diagnostic services, including digital mam-
mography for the early detection of breast cancer. Gifts to our Habitat for Healing
Campaign will help fund the purchase of two new digital mammography units.
Digital mammography features many advantages, such as faster scanning and
reduced breast compression. Images are also stored electronically versus on film,
so health care providers can access and manipulate them more effectively.
“Innovative technology, such as our new 64-slice CT scanner, helps physicians more
clearly detect many complex conditions, from heart and vascular disease to stroke and cancer.
As a result, patients receive a faster, more accurate diagnosis.”
– Daniel Stewart, MD, Chief of Staff, Borgess Medical Center
Co-Chairman, Habitat for Healing Campaign
YOUR VITAL ROLE
Sir Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by
what we give.” Every step of the way during our 116-year history, giving has
fostered our ability to deliver compassionate, high-quality care to southwest and
south central Michigan. In fact, Borgess Health Alliance was born from the kind-
ness of Bishop Casper H. Borgess, a benevolent man who donated $5,000 to
Monsignor Francis O’Brien in 1888.
The generosity provided by Bishop Borgess, the Sisters of St. Joseph – and people
like you – has fueled our growth from a 20-bed hospital to a sophisticated health
network serving an 11-county area with more than 132 sites of care and 67
satellite clinics.
Today, Borgess remains a vital resource, and your support will play a vital role in
our future. Transforming our Level I Emergency & Trauma Center, as well as
sustaining technological advancements, will help us thrive in an ever-changing
health care arena. More importantly, it will strengthen our ability to meet crucial
patient needs and preserve the health of the community we proudly call home.
While the Habitat for Healing Campaign seeks to raise a minimum of $2 million,
each dollar counts. Best of all, we will leverage your contribution. To demonstrate
our commitment to the campaign’s success, the Borgess Foundation will
contribute one dollar from a special endowment fund for every three dollars
donated (up to $500,000).
Donations to our campaign can take the form of cash gifts, or through gifts of stock,
property or other assets. We welcome and encourage you to make a gift in memory
or honor of someone, or establish a named gift yourself. To make a donation
or learn more about naming opportunities, please review the information
enclosed in this brochure.
“We are confident that this is the right thing to do for our patients and our community.
It’s exciting, meaningful work and I hope everyone who can will take advantage of the
opportunity to participate in the Habitat for Healing Campaign.”
– Larry Cain, Chairman, Board of Directors, Borgess Health Alliance
Chairman, Board of Directors, Borgess Foundation
Inside our new and convenient atrium
entrance stands a sculpture created
in honor of Dr. Homer Stryker, the
orthopedic surgeon and medical pioneer
who not only served countless patients
at Borgess, but also launched the
world-renowned Stryker Corporation.
