1. Freak the Mighty
Day 3
Daily Targets : Students will be able to analyze the characters that are introduced in
Freak the Mighty.
Ohio Common Core Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.6.1 Cite textual evidence to
support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the
text.
Section 1 Vocabulary: unvanquished, fiend, hunkering, bulkhead, propulsion,
sobriquet, postulated, quest, invincible, hulking, depleted, regurgitate.
Materials:
Lesson: Freak the Mighty, Graphic Organizer
Activities:
1. Have students turn to the story “Eleven” in their textbooks and read aloud as a class.
2. Ask students to think about the main character. Questions I ask them to consider include:
Who is the main character? What is she experiencing during the story? How does this
experience make her feel and think? What images did this story convey? What words or
descriptions does Cisneros use to tell the audience how the main character is feeling and
thinking?
3. Model the Character Trait Chart activity sheet for the story “Eleven.”
2. 4. Hand out the Character Trait Chart activity sheet for students to complete with the novel
Freak the Mighty.
5. Assessment: WriteAbout: Pass out WriteAbout sheet to students. Allow students to talk
and complete the WriteAbout in partners.
6. Homework: Packets are due on Friday, read chapter 3 and finish Character Chart, if it
wasn’t finished in class.
