AAL
Alzheimer’s Association Lebanon was established in 2004 as a
national non-governmental not-for-profit organization that aims
to improve the living standards of individuals with dementia and
their carers.
Studies show there are about 30 000 Alzheimer’s disease cases in
Lebanon upon which AAL has set its two-fold vision:
1 – Reaching out to more families to help provide a better
quality of life to patients and their carers.
2 – Help in building a professional infrastructure for the support
and care through insuring better knowledge about the disease
and breaking the taboo around it.
4. Caregiver’s meetings
Bi-Monthly meetings providing support and additional information targeting caregivers of Alzheimer's patients.
Conducted at the Lebanese Order of Physicians, by renowned specialized Lebanese doctors, Neurologists, Geriatric Medicine, and Psychiatrists.
In the year 2013, 6 caregiver’s meetings were held reaching out to 700 persons who are interested in Alzheimer’s disease and its management.

6. World Alzheimer’s Day Awareness
Campaign: Remembrance Tree
In partnership with the Lions Clubs International – district 351, Alzheimer’s Association Lebanon launched
its Remembrance Tree Campaign on September 22, 2013.
The Campaign took place in five different venues simultaneously across Lebanon while reaching in the aim
of raising awareness on Alzheimer’s disease.
10 000 brochures were distributed in one day.
It also coincided with a social media campaign to support Alzheimer’s patients and their families through
the use of #iRemember on all social media platforms. AAL received 1050 #iRemember. Barista Espresso
donated one USD for every hashtag.
8. Public Lectures
Public lectures provide information on AD to a large number of people in various regions.
These public lectures take place in different venues (Community Development Centers, Universities, Companies,
etc.) across Lebanon to spread awareness about Alzheimer’s disease.
In the year 2013, 12 public lectures were delivered in various regions and venues including private lectures for
Army Doctors, the American University of Beirut, and Municipality of Jounieh. AAL reached out to
approximately 600 attendees between caregivers, specialized doctors, nurses, social workers, students and public.
9. AAL Website & Social Media
AAL Website & Social Media platforms provide Information and up-to-date news. It includes
information about Alzheimer's disease, in addition to a widget with daily news on AD - and
announces events of AAL.
AAL official page has 689 active Likers and 1299 friends on Facebook.
AAL has a very active social media platform with daily interactions with various caregivers and
public.

11. Support Group Meetings
These meetings help in sharing experiences to improve the care given to the patient, the general well-
being, as well as encourages new experiences, while diminishing stigma.
These meeting are held at AAL offices in collaboration with an Occupational therapist every 2
weeks.
24 Support group meetings were held during the year 2013, reaching out to more than 40
beneficiaries and their families.
12. Personalized Counseling & Helpline
Provide counseling, reassurance and a professional listening ear, as well as give up-to-
date information and advice on new methods and techniques to solve problems.
In 2013, AAL received approximately 100 calls from caregivers looking for
information on Alzheimer’s disease and its management. AAL has become one of
the most important information resources for AD families and caregivers looking for
advice and counseling.
13. Wandering Task Force
In collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities and using AAl’s
social media & Media connections, AAL advertises and assists in the search for
wandering elderly with dementia.
In 2013, AAL helped one lost Alzheimer’s patient find her home.
15. Alzheimer’s disease Early Diagnosis
Program
This program was executed in partnership with the
Ministry of Social Affairs and Lions Clubs
International – district 351.
6 Early Diagnosis Sessions took place during the year
2013: Nabatieh ,Mazraa (Beirut) ,Jounieh ,Zahle
,Saoufar,Omr Al-Madid (Beirut)
300 Elderly above the age of 64 were screened for
Alzheimer’s disease.
80 cases of Dementia were diagnosed which
amounts for 27 percent of the Elderly across
Lebanon.
16. Youth Awareness Program
Awareness and sensitization activities on Alzheimer’s disease at Schools and Universities.
Alzheimer’s Association Lebanon launched its “Youth Awareness Program” on Thursday 21 November 2013.
The first awareness lecture took place at College Protestant Francais for Class 5 D.
