Elementary Education Student's Professional Statement
1. Professional Statement
My name is Alyssa Moriartey. I am currently attending the University of Michigan Flint
for my degree in Elementary Education. I am double minoring in Language Arts and
Mathematics. Including my first three semesters at Saginaw Valley State University and the rest
of my time at the University of Michigan Flint, I have been on the Dean’s List every semester. I
also have a lot of experience with children. I have been a swim instructor for children six months
to fifteen years old for the past 5 years. I enjoy getting to know these children while watching
them grow and become more confident in the water every week. I have also been a nanny for
two families for the past three years. One family has two children and the other family has five
children. Being a nanny to both of these families and being a swim instructor made me realize I
wanted to do something with children for the rest of my life, and what better job than being a
teacher.
“Great teachers teach children how to think not what to think- author unknown.” I think
this is a very inspiring quote and something all teachers should practice in their classrooms. As
educators, we should be allowing children to be creative, to have experiences through learning
and enjoy their time at school. Students should feel comfortable in the classroom to voice their
opinions in a polite way. Also students should feel comfortable when answering questions and
instead of there being one right or wrong way of doing something, the students can appreciate
the different ways that each other think to come up with the same answer. This goes along with
Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligence theory. Everyone has a different learning style, but all
students should be aware that not everyone learns and thinks the same way and that is okay. In
my classroom I want children to gain a true understanding and love for learning like I did in my
elementary school.
In my free time, while I am not working, in school or studying I enjoy spending time with
my family. My family is a very important part of my life and they have made me who I am
today. One of my favorite things to do with my family is go to Michigan football games. I have
done this with my family for as long as I can remember. Other than going to Ann Arbor for
Michigan games, my favorite place to go is my family cabin on Big Twin Lake. My cousins,
aunt, uncle, cousins and family friends spend a lot of time up north together. It is so relaxing to
be out on the lake, hanging out on the beach with everyone I love in one place and cuddling up
by the camp fire at night.
