PER SON AL ST AT EMENT
I started my career in gear manufacture as an apprentice engineer at David Brown Radicon in
Huddersfield in 1995. My apprenticeship included four years of working in various departments in gear
manufacturing and day release to Huddersfield Technical College, where I attained an NVQ level 3
qualification. After completing my training I stayed at David Brown for a further four years until I was 24. I
then left to pursue a venture in the south of England at the Xtrac Company in Newbury, making gearboxes
for racing cars.
After 9 months at Xtrac I was made redundant and returned back home to the north of England, where I
worked for a number of firms involved in CNC machine manufacturing, working through agencies whilst still
looking for permanent employment. This continued for about a year until I went to work for Renold Gears
where i stayed for 7 years.
Whilst working as a ‘temp’ through agencies I worked with a wide range of products in different industries
really, such as manufacturing couplings for fire engine hoses, programming CNC routing machines for the
manufacture of various wood products such as fire places and office furniture, I even did some work for a
Johnson and Johnson pharmaceutical company in Leeds making replacement bones out of surgical grade
stainless steel.
My current employment is with the Dowty Propellers division of GE Aviation, Staverton, in the Repair &
Overhaul shop, overhauling various parts from propeller systems. I Transferred there from Allen Gears
where i had spent 5 years (also a GE company) as work was quiet and i wanted to work days rather than
shifts. 9 months in we are having a very odd shift forced upon us which i'm not able to do, I've not been
happy with the way GE operate and am now looking elsewhere for work and to further my career with a
fresh company and a new challenge.
