Independent
Candidate for
Seanad Éireann
(NUI)
Vote / VótáilDear Friends,
In a changing national and global landscape,
I believe we need an integrated vision for society,
economy and environment. If elected, I will
draw on my wide experience at national and
international level to serve as a clear, courageous
and effective voice for civil society in Seanad
Éireann.
Equality has been a driving principle for me from
my early days growing up and campaigning in
Galway to my academic and advocacy work with
Comhlámh, Trócaire, Older & Bolder and the
National Women’s Council of Ireland.
As an independent full-time Senator I will use
my analytic and collaborative skills to be a
change-maker by influencing policy, scrutinising
Government proposals and initiating legislation
which truly reflects and serves the people and the
public good. I will bring care, creativity and long-
term thinking into the heart of political debate.
“it has been enriching to work with Alice Mary
Higgins and share her socio-economic expertise.
She is efficient, generous and outspoken with real
integrity and remarkable ability to express and
convince at the highest level.”
Viviane Teitelbaum,
President, European Women’s Lobby
“To challenge inequality you need to do more
than be well intentioned: you need to understand
cause and consequence and have well conceived
strategies for change. Alice-Mary Higgins is the
only person for the job. She has the commitment
and credentials.”
Dr Anne Byrne, Head of School of Political
Science and Sociology, NUI Galway
‘Her vibrant advocacy and understanding
of social history could make a valuable
contribution” Caitriona Crowe, Archivist
(nominator)
“a powerful voice for women and equality “
Ailbhe Smyth, Equality Advocate (seconder)
“We need her there to link the local and global,
promote sustainable development and support
inclusive education”
Frank Geary, Development Education Director
“I will bring care, creativity and long-term
thinking into the heart of political debate.”

2. “Alice-Mary’s comprehensive
understanding of policy-making,
determination and commitment to
social justice all guarantee she will
make a real contribution for change.”
EQUALITY AND HUMAN RIGHTS
If elected, I will seek equality proofing of social and
economic policies. I will support a rights-based
approach to health, housing and education and
legislation to ensure equality of access. I will
continue to advocate for equality between women
and men and for the closing of the pay and pension
gap, quality affordable childcare, resources to
tackle violence against women, and repeal of
the 8th Amendment. I will promote equality of
representation in all areas of national life, including
arts, sport, STEM and our educational institutions.
PUBLIC SERVICES FOR
THE PUBLIC GOOD
Delivery of quality public services must
be our national priority. The housing crisis
highlights the danger of over-reliance on
market solutions and the need for greater
public investment. I will promote the role
of public research within our institutions
as a driver of innovation and attach social
clauses to the €12 billion spent on public
procurement each year, rewarding good
business practice and maximising wider
benefit.
Why vote for me
Anastasia Crickley
Vice President United Nations CERD, Former
Head of Applied Social Studies NUI Maynooth.
SUSTAINABLE ECONOMY
I will advocate for a sustainable economy, one
which delivers decent work, supports fair taxation
and recognises the cost and contribution of care.
I will press for long-term environmental planning
including integrated public transport, a transition
towards carbon neutrality and respect for our
natural resources as a public good.
PARTICIPATION AND POLITICAL REFORM
I stand for an Ireland where everyone can participate
fully. From my work with older people and with
young people in unemployment, I understand
the need for investment in education, youth work,
community development, social care and mental
health supports. I will also champion the importance
of cultural participation and resources to support
the Arts. Committed to Seanad reform, I will press
for universal suffrage, as sought by Senators Feargal
Quinn and John Crowne, and support greater public
and civil society engagement with the Oireachtas.
INTERNATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY
I will ensure Seanad Éireann plays a stronger role
in examining EU legislation, holding Government
accountable for its international policies, and
driving constructive public debate on global
issues such as climate change, trade, conflict and
migration, which are shaping our shared world.
