2. OBOR VS Ancient Silk Road
OBOR (One Belt One Road)
• Is a modern initiative proposed by the Chinese government in
2013 to enhance connectivity and cooperation between countries
in Asia, Europe, and Africa.
• It involves the construction of infrastructure projects, such as
railways, highways, ports, and pipelines, to facilitate trade and
investment among participating countries.
The ancient Silk Road
• Was a network of trade routes that connected China to the
Mediterranean region during the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220
CE). It was named after the lucrative trade in Chinese silk that
was transported along the route.
• The Silk Road also facilitated the exchange of goods, ideas, and
cultures between East and West, and played a significant role in
the development of civilizations in the regions it traversed.
3. OBOR VS Ancient Silk Road
Maritime silk route:
• The Maritime Silk Road or Maritime Silk Route is
the maritime section of the historic Silk Road that
connected Southeast Asia, China, the Indian
subcontinent, the Arabian
peninsula, Somalia, Egypt and Europe. It began by the
2nd century BCE and flourished later on until the 15th
century CE.The Maritime Silk Road was primarily
established and operated by Austronesian sailors in
Southeast Asia, Tamil merchants in India and Southeast
Asia, and by Persian and Arab traders in the Arabian
Sea and beyond
4. The Silk Road Economic Belt is primarily land-based to connect China with Central Asia, Eastern Europe, and Western Europe
Difference between ancient silk road & Maritime silk route:
Maritime silk route:
• The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road is sea-
based, connecting China's southern coast to
the Mediterranean, Africa, South-East Asia,
and Central Asia.
Ancient silk route:
• The Silk Road Economic Belt is primarily land-
based to connect China with Central Asia,
Eastern Europe, and Western Europe
5. Aim Of Project
• The aim of OBOR (One Belt One Road) is to enhance connectivity and
cooperation among participating countries through the construction of
infrastructure projects, including railways, highways, ports, and pipelines.
• The initiative aims to promote economic development, trade, and
investment by improving transportation and communication links between
countries in Asia, Europe, and Africa.
• The ancient Silk Road and marine routes, on the other hand, were
primarily trade routes that facilitated the exchange of goods, ideas, and
cultures between East and West.
• While the ancient Silk Road and marine routes were important channels
for trade and cultural exchange in their time, they were not part of a
coordinated initiative like OBOR.
• The initiative aims to promote modern infrastructure and transportation
technologies in the participating countries, and to connect them more
closely through economic cooperation and development.
6. History
• The ancient Silk Road was a network of trade routes that connected
China with the rest of the world. It was established over 2,000
years ago during the Han Dynasty and was used to transport goods
such as silk, spices, and precious metals between China, India, the
Middle East, and Europe. The Silk Road played a key role in the
development of international trade and cultural exchange, and it
was instrumental in the spread of Buddhism from India to China.
• The One Belt One Road initiative, also known as the Belt and Road
Initiative (BRI), is a modern initiative launched by the Chinese
government in 2013. It aims to revive the ancient Silk Road by
building new infrastructure and connecting countries through trade
and investment. The initiative includes two main components: the
"Belt", which is a network of overland corridors that connect China
with Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East, and the "Road",
which is a network of maritime routes that connect China with
Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The
initiative is part of China's efforts to become a global economic
superpower and to promote economic development and cultural
exchange in the countries involved.
7. Difference between OBOR & maritime route:
• The six more points of difference or similarities between the ancient Silk Road and the One Belt One
Road initiative:
1. The ancient Silk Road was a product of trade between China and the West, while the One Belt One
Road initiative is part of China's global economic strategy.
2. The ancient Silk Road was a dangerous and difficult journey, while the One Belt One Road initiative
aims to make trade and travel easier and more efficient.
3. The ancient Silk Road was a key factor in the spread of Buddhism from India to China, while the One
Belt One Road initiative aims to promote cultural exchange and understanding between countries.
4. The ancient Silk Road was disrupted by the Mongol invasions, while the One Belt One Road
initiative faces challenges such as political instability and security risks.
5. The ancient Silk Road was a major factor in the development of the world's first multinational
corporations, while the One Belt One Road initiative aims to promote the growth of new businesses
and industries.
6. The ancient Silk Road was a key factor in the development of international trade and globalization,
while the One Belt One Road initiative is part of China's efforts to become a global economic
superpower.
8. 1. The ancient Silk Road was established over 2,000 years ago, while the One Belt One Road initiative
was launched in 2013.
2. The ancient Silk Road was primarily a land-based trade route, while the One Belt One Road initiative
includes both land and sea routes.
3. The ancient Silk Road was used primarily for the trade of goods, while the One Belt One Road initiative
also includes investment and infrastructure development.
4. The ancient Silk Road connected China with Europe, while the One Belt One Road initiative connects
China with over 60 countries across Asia, Europe, and Africa.
5. The ancient Silk Road was a network of several different routes, while the One Belt One Road initiative
is a planned and coordinated effort to connect countries through trade and investment.
6. The ancient Silk Road was used to transport goods such as silk, spices, and precious metals, while the
One Belt One Road initiative focuses on infrastructure development, including ports, railways, and
highways.
7. Both the ancient Silk Road and the One Belt One Road initiative have had a significant impact on the
economies of the countries involved, promoting trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
Difference between OBOR & maritime route:
9. Conclusion
• In conclusion, the Silk Road was a historical trade route that connected
China to the Mediterranean Sea and Europe, while the One Belt One Road
initiative is a modern development strategy that aims to promote economic
development and cooperation among countries in Asia, Europe, and
Africa.
• The Silk Road facilitated the exchange of goods, ideas, and culture
between the East and the West, while the One Belt One Road initiative
involves investing in infrastructure, trade, and cultural exchange to
promote economic growth and cooperation among the participating
countries.
• The Maritime Silk Road is a part of the One Belt One Road initiative that
aims to connect China to Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Africa through
the Indian Ocean.
• The Maritime Silk Road is similar to the historical Maritime route, which
was a network of sea routes that connected the East and the West.
