Connecticut guard Shabazz Napier (13) celebrates after winning the NCAA tournament college basketball championship game against Kentucky Monday in Arlington, Texas.
They shocked the world again.
The magical run of the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team culminated with
a 60-54 win over Kentucky on Monday night at AT&T Stadium in Texas.
It’s been 15 years since Khalid El-Amin ran across the Tropicana Field floor in St. Petersburg,
Fla., tugging at his jersey and yelling “We shocked the world!” after the Huskies defeated
mighty Duke for their first national title in 1999.
Last season only seemed like 15 years, as the Huskies were banned from postseason play due to
poor Academic Progress Rates.
But coach Kevin Ollie and these Huskies have re-established the power of March Madness, the
ability to bring together a state for one final stretch before it’s divided by its baseball allegiances.
As a No. 7 seed and a 100-1 underdog to win the national championship, the Huskies were given
little chance to get out of Buffalo in the opening rounds, let alone advance to their fifth Final
Four in 16 seasons and fourth championship game.
