Taste is one of the basic senses that allows humans and animals to distinguish between edible and non-edible substances. The anatomy and physiology of taste involves taste buds on the tongue and palate that contain taste receptor cells sensitive to different tastes like sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami. When a substance comes in contact with these taste receptor cells, signals are sent to the brain which allows us to perceive different tastes.
