Dozens of small Indian dairy firms that could not pay farmers to
procure milk owing to cash crunch immediately after demonetisation in
November first week, coupled with drought in some states, had resorted to
buying skimmed milk powder (SMP) from large players to convert it into
milk. This phenomenon of using SMP to make milk in winter season -a
first in India -has helped large dairies register abnormal growths in SMP
sales, which was also aided by improved demand from institutional
players, said analysts. Usually, large dairies convert excess liquid milk
production in winter seasons into SMP to be used for converting it into
milk later during lean summer seasons. According to Shiva Mudgil, senior
analyst with Rabobank, it is the unorganised channel that accounts for
more than a third of Indian milk production that suffered the impact of
demonetisation and lower milk availability owing to drought in some
states.
The Association of Planters of Kerala (APK) has urged the state
government to abolish plantation tax and agricultural income tax in the
state budget that will be presented on Friday. The association also
demanded the government to remove seigniorage on rubber trees and
provide financial support for soil and conservation facilities as the state is
facing one of the worst drought conditions. The association chairman
Thomas Jacob said the crop production has come down by 30 per cent in
tea, 14 per cent in rubber, 60 per cent in cardamom and 40 per cent in
coffee due to drought conditions. He said Kerala is the only state in the
country which levies plantation tax. In a pre-budget meeting with the
Finance Minister Thomas Issac, the association said in view of the severe
crop loss due to drought conditions, it may not be possible for the
producers to offer work to the employees. The association chairman has
urged the government to look at the possibility of extending MNREGS
programmes to the plantation workers during the summer season to
mitigate the ill effect of climate change on employment
Soyabean futures traded marginally lower on NCDEX on bumper
supplies in the global markets, even though delays in Brazilian shipments
capped some losses. At least 11 ships are facing delays in loading soybeans
at Brazil's northern ports after rains washed out roads and disrupted the
progress of trucks carrying beans from the centre-west region. The contract
for March delivery was trading at Rs 2904.00, down by 0.45% or Rs 13.00
from its previous closing of Rs 2917.00. The open interest of the contract
stood at 165190 lots. The contract for April delivery was trading at Rs
2984.00, down by 0.2% or Rs 6.00 from its previous closing of Rs 2990.00.
The open interest of the contract stood at 135110 lots on NCDEX.
Coriander futures traded higher on NCDEX as participants built up fresh
positions on the back of rising demand in the spot market. Further, limited
arrivals from major growing regions also fuelled the uptrend. The contract
for April delivery was trading at Rs 6936.00, up by 0.54% or Rs 37.00 from
its previous closing of Rs 6899.00. The open interest of the contract stood at
29420 lots. The contract for May delivery was trading at Rs 7037.00, up by
0.29% or Rs 20.00 from its previous closing of Rs 7017.00. The open
interest of the contract stood at 7150 lots on NCDEX.
Turmeric futures traded up on NCDEX on receipt of fresh upcountry
demand for the turmeric at the spot market. Though, some gains were
capped on heavy arrivals from the producing regions. The turmeric arrivals
in the country increase to 28,337 tons last week (20-25 February) compared
to 7,300 tons during previous week. The contract for April delivery was
trading at Rs 6850, up by 0.82% or Rs 56.00 from its previous closing of Rs
6794. The open interest of the contract stood at 13755 lots. The contract for
May delivery was trading at Rs 6844, up by 1.00% or Rs 68.00 from its
previous closing of Rs 6776. The open interest of the contract stood at 2805
lots on NCDEX.
