I hadn’t been to the Kruger National
Park in decades, partly because of
impressions of irresponsible, ill-
tempered louts on the roads. There was
none of that in the 10 000 hectare
private Imbali Safari concession. While
guides sometimes take guests into
public areas of the park, the public
may not enter the concession, so you
will only see game vehicles from the
other two camps – Hoyo Hoyo and
Imbali Safari Lodge – within the
private enclave.
We got to experience each lodge,
starting with a charming welcome at
Hoyo Hoyo (“welcome” in Tsongan). We
had taken a long route, driving through
Kruger for five hours, stopping
occasionally but anxious to get to
our destination. The orangey-ochre
walls of the Tsonga-influenced
buildings were a welcome sight, as was
a chilled fragrant facecloth and
homemade lemonade.
Earthy Hoyo Hoyo has six gorgeous
“beehive” suites with high, tapering
thatched reed roofs, outdoor showers
and private decks. Fabrics, décor and
objets d’art are sourced from the local
Tsonga community. This chilled,
intimate escape is on an ancient
elephant route on the Mluwati River
with a busy eye-level waterhole on the
other side of the dry riverbed. Like
Hamiltons it is unfenced and there’s no
wandering about alone at night.
Nicolas “Baboon” Mathebula served
us a delicious lunch/high tea and
entertained us with his sharp wit
before we headed off on our first game
drive – unusually fast.
The haste was soon apparent as we
slowed and stopped – a leopard slowly
waking, then stalking impala. Being
rutting season, we also saw swift
impala vs impala clashes.
Dinner on the deck brought more
delights including ostrich steak, tiger
prawns and taglietelle, great apple
pastry with ice cream, a curious civet
and other nocturnal creatures.
Similar dinner excitement awaited
us at Imbali Safari Lodge, the central
point within the concession. The
watering hole at night was often more
interesting than the great food (the
broccoli and almond soup a standout).
Buffalo, rhino, elephants and leopard
all made appearances, along with
majestic kudu and smaller antelope.
Imbali is bigger than the other
camps with a large lodge and 12
luxurious chalets, each with a private
plunge pool and spacious wooden decks
with loungers overlooking the
Nwatsitswonto riverbed.
The Imbali Safari concession is a
well-managed through-route for a huge
amount of wildlife. Sightings included
a pride of lion with eight cubs and a
mother elephant digging for water
while her eager baby kept pushing
sand back in the hole, but it was often
the relatively little things that
enthralled us such as tree squirrels,
banded and dwarf mongooses, tortoises
and the unusual Red Roman spider.
There are more than 500 bird species
in the park including suicidal spurfowl
zigzagging in front of the vehicle,
martial eagle, ground hornbills and
beautiful lilac-breasted rollers.
Passionate, excellent guide Ralf
Iezen took us on a walking trail,
showing us unusual flora and, with his
iPad app, attracting shy birds such as
the grey-headed bushshrike
(Spookvoel) by activating the bird call.
Superb.
