Management thought evolved over four major periods: (1) before 1880 focused on practical experience, (2) 1880-1930 saw the development of scientific management theory, (3) 1930-1960 expanded to consider human behavior, and (4) post-1950 embraced modern theories drawing from various fields to understand managing organizations.
