The increasing incidence of violence
on the streets of some communities is
alarming. Instead of the community
being a shelter from crimes and other
forms of harm, the streets have
become more dangerous for adults
and children. Keeping the streets safe
is a tough, yet achievable task that
enjoins both civil society and the state.

to keep the streets free of violence.
Streets should be well-lighted. A
neighborhood watch is a good
initiative to develop a partnership with
the police; instead of reacting to
crises, citizens could participate in
resolving them.
Community e orts
Work with everyone in the
community. This initiative requires all
hands on deck as safety should be
each member’s concern. Partner with
schools to establish drug-free zones,
and team up with recreation o cials
to do the same for parks. Provide
teens in the neighborhood with
activities such as tutoring programs,
recreation, part-time work, and
volunteer opportunities, instead of
leaving them behind to fall into the
hands of crime.
Family responsibility
Self and family safety should be the
top priority. In keeping one’s home
safe from unwelcomed individuals,
acquiring a weapon can be an option.
But while there are many families that
keep weapons in their homes, these
are most likely to hurt family
members than criminals. Think long
and hard about this.
It would be best to talk to the kids in
the family about violence and instill in
them that it isn’t approved at home or
anywhere as a means to solve
problems.
