It has been 10 years since HBO’s “The Wire” aired its series finale, and the show is still ingrained in the mind of
countless viewers. In discussions about the best TV shows of all time, "The Wire" deserves mention.

The show tells of the story of various law enforcement institutions in the Baltimore and their quest in resolving
various social issues such as the illegal drug trade, the seaport system, the local government and bureaucracy,
educational system, and the print news media.
Its creator, David Simon, described "The Wire" as “really about the American city, and about how we live together. It's
about how institutions have an effect on individuals. Whether one is a cop, a longshoreman, a drug dealer, a

2. politician, a judge or a lawyer, all are ultimately compromised and must contend with whatever institution to which
they are committed.”
The does away with the formulaic good-guy-versus-bad-guy routine, and instead, presents the city of Baltimore as
the show’s star and the system as the villain. The similarities among the power structures, such as the police
departments, the government, and the gangs make you wonder who is right and who is wrong.
And this is where the show’s central conflicts arise from.

It is presented in a manner that is grounded and in complete detail, thanks primarily to Simon’s previous work as a
police reporter in Baltimore. He also worked in tandem with Ed Burns, a former Baltimore police detective who worked
in the Homicide and Narcotics Division.
The ensemble cast also did particularly well in depicting characters that are loosely based on the different
personalities Simon and Burns met during their time in the force. In a way, “The Wire” was also a trailblazer in that it
employed a racially diverse cast, two of which would go on to become A-list actors, namely Idris Elba and Michael B.
