2. FATTY ACID NOMENCLATURE
๏ต Nomenclature reflects location of double bonds
๏ต Also used are common names (e.g: oleic, stearic, palmitic)
๏ต Linoleic is also known as 18:2 n-6
๏ต This means that F.A is 18 carbons in length, has 2 double bonds, the
first of which is on the 6th carbon
๏ต ARACHIDONIC => 20:4 n-6
๏ต Alpha Linolenic acid (ALA) and essential n-3 fatty acid, (18:3โ 9c,
โ 12c, โ 15c)
9. Acetylenic fatty acids
๏ต A number of different fatty acids have been identified having triple bonds.
๏ต The nomenclature is similar to double bonds , except that the โane ending of the
parent alkane is replaced with โynoic acid, diynoic acid, etc.
๏ต Lowercase โaโ to represent acetylenic bond
๏ต Example: tariaric (6-octadecynoic acid)
10. Furan fatty acids
๏ต Furan fatty acids are a group of fatty acids that contain a furan ring. To this furan ring, an
unbranched carboxylic acid and, at another position, an alkyl residue are attached. Natural
furan fatty acids are mono- or di-methylated on the furan ring
๏ต The first natural acid of this type (with R1 = R2 = H, m = 6 and n = 7) was found in the
seed oil of Exocarpus cupressiformis
๏ต Example:
