8. Statement of Research and Teaching Interests
Prof. Abdul Ghafoor Al-Shehabi
My general research and teaching interests are related but not limited to the following fields:
Dynamics, Control, Automation, Optimization, Modeling and Simulation. Mainly, I concentrate
in my research on the implementing one of the intelligent control strategies, which is a fuzzy logic,
in control system design for different kinds of mechanical and electrical systems, and especially
in the field of Aerospace engineering. Theses interests require from me to be familiar with many
topics such as mathematical modeling, computer programing, control system design strategies and
dynamic behavior of physical systems. Also, I did teach courses related to control system design
and flight Mechanics.
I think that my Ph.D. major, flight dynamics and control, and my both teaching and research
experiences gained during previous years qualify me to deal with any research topic places within
these topics. In the faculty of Mechanical Engineering in University of Aleppo, Syria, I had
performed many analytical, computational and experimental researches in control system design;
these researches and all the publication related to these interests support my wish to continue
performing such kinds of researches. I had worked in Old Dominion University, USA to develop
new technology for avoiding obstacles when UAV faces them during performing its flight mission
using intelligent control technologies so that the enemy cannot detect it and shut it down. Recently,
I have finished 2 year postdoctoral fellowship from University of Alberta to perform teaching and
research activities. I am looking to continue my academic activities outside Syria since I have
faced many difficulties in my academic teaching and research due the obstacles I met within the
Aerospace Engineering department in the faculty of mechanical engineering, University of
Aleppo. I hope teaching engineering courses and joining research team in your department will
help us exchange the experiences we have got. Also, I am have potential ability to work within
research team and I am able to engage a lot of graduate students in research activities. The fruit of
this collaboration by nature will establish great advantages and I am eager to continue my academic
work in this direction through a wider range of collaboration.
My future research goal is to implement “intelligent control systems” in order to control
mechanical or electrical Systems. For this research goal, I will focus on the following three
research areas. First, I will carry out research on dynamics/control interaction phenomena; this will
be critical design issues in some dynamical systems, so the fundamental understanding of the
phenomena is very important to successful implementation of the dynamics/ control algorithms.
Second, I will concentrate in my specialization on smart technologies in order to design intelligent
control system, this concentration may be critical in future areas of research. Finally, I will
continue my research on advanced control and decision-making algorithms for mechanical and
electrical systems. Beside my research, I will be able to deliver to both undergraduate and graduate
students courses related to mechatronics, automation, and control system design.
