  2. 2. A document that describes what you will dowith your data during your research & afteryou complete your projectWhat is a data management plan? From Flickr by spanautA natural fit withinterests in openscience andreproducibility ofresearch.
  3. 3. Who requires a DMP?Pretty soon….everyone.
  4. 4. DMP supplement may include:1. the types of data, samples, physical collections, software, curriculummaterials, and other materials to be produced in the course of the project2. the standards to be used for data and metadata format and content(where existing standards are absent or deemed inadequate, this shouldbe documented along with any proposed solutions or remedies)3. policies for access and sharing including provisions for appropriateprotection of privacy, confidentiality, security, intellectual property, orother rights or requirements4. policies and provisions for re-use, re-distribution, and the production ofderivatives5. plans for archiving data, samples, and other research products, andfor preservation of access to themNSF DMP RequirementsFrom Grant Proposal Guidelines:
  5. 5. NSF’s Vision*DMPs and their evaluation will grow & change overtime (similar to broader impacts)Peer review will determine next stepsCommunity-driven guidelines Different disciplines have different definitions of acceptabledata sharing Flexibility at the directorate and division levels Tailor implementation of DMP requirementEvaluation will vary with directorate, division, &program officer*UnofficiallyHelp from Jennifer Schopf, NSF
  6. 6. Challenge Researchers don’t know the necessary thingsto meet these new requirements Institutions are on the hook to ensurecompliance Proper compliance involves integration ofmany things (ie. Standards, policies, practices, infrastructure, etc.) Huge funding at stake
  7. 7. DMPTool:Data management planning made EASIER Data management is complex and requires adialogue amongst many stakeholders There’s a range of understanding andavailable support resources DMPTool focus is on: simplifying and scaling the common parts, developing a community, and providing functionality and integration with othertools to advance services when possible
  8. 8. Access Added to campus single sign-on service InCommon / Shibboleth Researchers use campus login
