fish species diversity in Patuakhali and Dumki fish market.
Fish biodiversity is being drastically reduced.
Improvement of fish habitat is essential in this current moment.
Fish marketing plays an important role in the economy of Bangladesh.
Therefore here necessary to –
provide institutional and organizational support, government support,

Bangladesh is blessed with huge open water resources with a wide range of aquatic diversity.
It contributes 3.61 percent to our national GDP and around one-fourth (24.41 percent) to the agricultural GDP.
Patuakhali is recognized as one of the most important fisheries zones of the country and plays a vital role for the development of fish culture and production. It is adjacent to the Bay of Bengal.
To know the diversity of fish species and the business condition of the market;
To gather knowledge about market condition of fish, find out problems and make some effective suggestions.
At first selection of the research title and objectives then select………………
Data were two types, primary and secondary.
The present study was conducted at the Patuakhali New Market and Dumki Bazar fish market in Patuakhali district under Barisal division in the southern region of Bangladesh.
Primary data were collected by questionnaire interviews and direct observation.
Secondary data were collected from various books, reports, journals, thesis and internet.
Preparation of questionnaire is very important to collect data by survey method.
Questionnaire was simple and focused mainly the fish species information.
For questionnaire interviews 29 fish retailers were randomly selected.
Interviews were conducted at the market center during marketing time.
Here the photo of a fish retailer, that I was take after questionnaire interview.
After collection of data, these were edited and coded.
All the collected data were summarized carefully and recorded.
Finally relevant tables were prepared in accordance with the objectives of the study.
A total of 34 inland and marine water fish and crustacean species were observed.
AMONG THEM - Ilish 6% (blue) and other fish species such as small indigenous species (SIS) (bele, poa, punti, etc.) 32%(green) largest portion in the pie chart, catfishes 9%(feroga color), prawn 3%(deep red), shrimp 15%(yellow), carps 17%(light red), marine fishes 12%(black), tilapia 3%(ash), koi 3% were presented in the pie chart.
Fresh, brackish and marine water species were found in the Patuakhali fish market and Dumki fish market at Patuakhali district.
Among them, 19 were freshwater fish species.
I present in the table only their local name and scientific name.
There are 12 exotic species available in our country
A total of 5 exotic species were found in the Patuakhali and Dumki fish market.
A total of 6 crustacean species were found in the Patuakhali and Dumki fish market.
I present their local and scientific name in the table.
A total of 4 marine water species were found in the Patuakhali and Dumki fish market.
Because Patuakhali district is called daughter of sea and it is the main entrance for the beach of Kuakata.
According to IUCN (2000), among the 7 fish species in the table, 4 were endangered, 1 vulnerable and 2 critically endangered.
The critically endangered species were Pangasius pangasius and Puntius sarana.
Five types of marketing channels were identified in this study
Fish farmer/fisherman – aratdar – paiker – retailer – consumer, Fish farmer/fisherman – paiker – retailer – consumer, Aratdar – paiker – retailer – consumer,
Farmer/fisherman – local fish traders – consumer and Farmer/fisherman – fish arat/market – consumer.
A number of constraints for fish marketing were reported by the retailers.
The highest proportion of respondents (21%) less availability of fish, 10% of respondents identified as lack of infrastructure, 14% identified lack of storages facilities, 7% low market price and 7% identified lack of electricity
Fish biodiversity is being drastically reduced due to environment and man-made hazards
Improvement of fish habitat is essential in this current moment to conserve the valuable fishes in our country.
Introduction of modern wholesaling and retailing facilities, Improvement of infrastructure and storage facilities,
Electricity supply as well as drainage facilities should be improved, and Improvement of hygienic conditions of fish markets.
