2. What I like about it.
I like the fact that the beginning scene is short
and too the point but leaves a sense of
mysterious and fear about the rest of the film.
The hole film is like a jigsaw puzzle and the
opening scene is the first peace. You cant not
watch the opening scene but watch the rest it
wouldn't make sense and you cant just watch
the opening scene it all links together.
3. How it feeds into the rest of the film.
The first scene only shows three young girls
who kill themselves for no reason out of the
blue. In the rest of the film this continues to
happen children dying unexpectedly and in
mysterious ways. Its later shown that the
childrens deaths are because of a ghost which
a young man investigates into leading to bad
consequences.
4. How it has introduced the characters.
The first scene only introduces three young girls none of
which are any main characters. It doesn’t give you
names of anyone including the girls leaving a sense of
mystery. Later on during the film you realise the girls
link to all the main characters in a certain way for
example the person who's giving Arthur an
accommodation is the girls father, Arthur is the
investigator of the house and The Women In Black, The
Women In Black is the cause behind the childrens
deaths and the horse and carriage which Arthur travels
in links to why The Woman In Black seeks for revenge.
5. How it uses sound etc.
At the beginning of the film there's silence except music music in
which sounds like its coming from a musical box or a kids toy. In
previous horrors this sound creates tension and fear on its own. To
combined with this the young girls look possessed in most cases a
possessed person usually relates to a horror film. This creates more
tension and fear and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The only
time you hear sound from what's happening is once the girls had
jumped out of the window and there what you presume is mother
screams. This suggests what we heard before hand is what the
children heard they were completely oblivious to there surrounding
they had no sense of control which corresponds with them standing
and walking mean while breaking there toys. The sudden thud on
the ground and scream suggests what the music and suspense was
building up to has now ended but its only the beginning.
6. Genre and theme.
The film is a horror. You can sense this by the
first scene. All the build up of tension, fear and
mysteriousness from the music to the
strangely acting children shows you it’s a
horror. You know that this is only the
beginning of what's about to come and
although it leaves you with excitement it also
triggers fear.
7. How it introduces the plot.
Everything that happens from this point into
the storey links back to the start. The
beginning shows girls/children mysteriously
killing themselves and this is what the film is
about. Children dying and no one
understanding how.
8. How it hooks the viewer.
I believe it hooks the viewer because the opening
scene Is two minutes long if that and within them
two minutes you have people on the edge of
there seats with mixed emotions you’ve got fear,
excitement, horror, mystery, scared among with a
range of others showing it’s a powerful beginning
there for a powerful film. Once you’ve started
you need to find out what's been happening. It
doesn’t give you the answer straight away the
film slowly gives you clues and information and
you start to slowly peace it together like a puzzle.
