5. 4.Employment opportunities
primary sector: Among urban female workers, a large proportion of female workers, 18.3 per cent or
two in every 11 workers were employed in the primary sector in 2004–5. However, this was a decline
from 30.3 per cent in 1987–8. Secondly, we also see concomitant increase in female employment in the
tertiary sector, from 38.6 per cent in 1987–8 to 46.0 percent in 1993–4, and to 49.5 per cent in 2004–5.
There was also a slight increase in secondary sector employment among females from 31.0 per cent in
1987–8 to 32.2 per cent in 2004–5.
Secondary sector: The proportion of secondary employment among females was only slightly less than
the proportion among males. Looking at this more closely by two different periods, a decline in
secondary.
Tertiary sector: An increase in tertiary sector employment can be seen in the pre-reforms period and
vice versa in the reforms period. It seems that the secondary sector has revived in urban India. Our
understanding is that this is because of increase in employment in the construction sector.
