Why are dogs great protectors?
1. Why are dogs great protectors?
Dogs and people have been living together harmoniously for many centuries. As family pets today,
dogs are companions, protectors, hunters, herders and working dogs, much the same as their
earliest domesticated ancestors.
History
It is believed the first dogs were not accepted by their pack, maybe due to more playful
personalities. People saw the benefits of having dogs around, mainly their abilities to protect and
guard as well as hunt.
History
Mastiffs, wolf-type dogs, greyhounds, pointing dogs and shepherding dogs have been found to have
existed during the Bronze Age, around 4500 B.C.
Early Guard Dogs
Early documented cases of dogs being used as guards come from several regions around the world.
For example, Greeks used 50 dogs to protect the fortress of Corinth in the fifth century B.C.
Behavior
Protection is an instinct more than a learned behavior that stems from the territoriality evident in
wolf packs. When a dog is protecting its human(s) and home, it is protecting the members of its pack
and territory.
Guard Training
Dogs can be trained to attack and release attack on command, to watch as a sentry at a certain
position and to recognize several different threats.
