2. 2. The word "animal" comes from the Latin word animalis, meaning "having breath". In everyday colloquial usage, the word usually refers to non-human animals.
3. 3. Animals have several characteristics that set them apart from other living things.
4. 4. Pet Animals
A pet is an animal kept for companionship and enjoyment or a household animal, as opposed to wild animals. The most popular pets are noted for their loyal or playful characteristics, for their attractive appearance.
5. 5. Dog
Dogs were domesticated from gray wolves about 15,000 years ago. They must have been very valuable to early human settlements, for they quickly became ubiquitous across world cultures. Dogs perform many roles for people, such as hunting, herding, pulling loads, protection, assisting police and military, companionship, and, more recently, aiding handicapped individuals.
6. 6. Cat
The cat (Felis catus), also known as the domestic cat is a small furry domesticated carnivorous mammal that is valued by humans for its companionship and for its ability to hunt vermin and household pests. Cats are similar in anatomy to the other felids, with strong, flexible bodies, quick reflexes, sharp retractable claws, and teeth adapted to killing small prey. As nocturnal predators, cats use their acute hearing and ability to see in near darkness to locate prey. Not only can cats hear sounds too faint for human ears, they can also hear sounds higher in frequency than humans can perceive.
7. 7. Hamster
Hamster is a common name to many small mammals rodents. Nocturnal, up at night, sleeps during the day. There are many types of hamsters, but only a few types are kept as pets.
8. 8. Fish
Fish do not require as much attention as some other pets, but they still require care and attention in order to remain healthy.
