generally more valuable than a list of
prospects. They have shown that they
have the ability and the willingness to
spend money, so you can reasonably
expect that they will buy more from you
in the future.

by giving something away as an incentive to get
people to give you their name and email. This
obviously works, but the problem is you don't
really know if those people are willing or even
able to pay you for something in the future.
There can be value in a list even if they don't
buy anything from you, but for the most part

actually pay you for something at some point.

to get something for free than to

So you can build a larger list, faster, but
the size of your list isn't the most

list, and still get better conversions with
that many fewer people. It's all about
the relationship you have with the
list, and the quality of the leads getting

it for things like directing people to "like"
Facebook pages, comment on blog posts and
so on. These things don't require any payment
but they still have value to you.
You can even offer further free incentives to
those people in order to get them to take these
actions, if you wish. They've already shown an
interest in free "stuff" so if you keep offering
them more, you can often leverage those lists
in many ways.
