Current Events Writing Assignment: : Crime and Theory What to do?Select a newspaper
article (of your choice such as Daily News, NY Times, etc.) related to crime. The selected
articles must be between the years of 2015-2018. Read the article and write at least 2
response paper. Format of paper: typed double-space Times-Roman 12 inch Font, 1-inch
margins. Points will be deduced for inappropriate format. The response paper must include
the following (not answering questions completely will reduce your paper
grade): 1. Introduction paragraph. 2. Summarize of the article (in your own words);
the summary should include in an essay format the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, &
HOW. In-text citations must be included in this section. 3. Explanation on how the article
relates specifically to the material covered throughout the course. For this assignment, you
must discuss key concepts covered in the textbook chapters 1-3. In-text citations must be
included in this section. a. Identify and define the crime that is discussed in the
newspaper article. b. Select a theory that explains the crime discussed in the article.
Students must explain the theory in detail: what does the theory say? How does the theory
explain the crime discussed in the article? How to prevent crime based on the
theory. c. Choose 4 concepts/terms from chapters 1-3 and explain how they relate to
the selected article, for example: mens rea, actus reus, violation, misdemeanor, felony,
occupational, organized, visible, crimes without victims, political, cyber, 13-Steps in a
decision making process (investigation, arrest, booking, etc.), Bill of Rights (1st, 4th, 5th,
6th, 8th Amendments), mala in se, mala prohibita, criminal defenses (duress, mistake of
fact, necessity, etc). AGAIN, explain, define, and relate those concepts/cases to the article.
