CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
The goal of this study is to develop a variation in conducting process of teaching and
learning English at Pondok Pesantren Kampus Ainul Yaqin Islamic University of Malang in
which the students learn English for communication purpose and Profession theme for
reading using English Grammar in use, written by Ray Mond Murphy. This chapter
comprises background of the study, Research Problem, developmental goal, specification of
the product, assumption, limitation of the study and definition of key terms.
1.1 Background of the study
Welcoming the improvement of science, technology, and knowledge have the
majority of citizens to own very high qualification of foreign language (English) abilities,
skill, and performance either for foramal or informal use. The use of English as a means of
communication has spread of very fast through the entire life of ours like, academicals area,
social life, and business.
In addition, the roles of English has crucial position in carry out certain population or
individual to compete in this modern life, since the very high qualification of English skills,
abilities, and performance are essentially needed to update the current information, state of
the art of certain discipline; therefore, the educational system has to develop curriculum,
syllabus, and English module in the perspective of Second language Acquisition (SLA) in
which the designers to considers some aspects, postulated by (Douglas Brown. H 2000:3)
1. Who does the learning and teaching
2. What must the learner learn and the teacher teach?
3. How does the learning take place
4. When does second language learning take place ?

5. Where does second language learning occur?
6. Why are learners attempting to acquire the second language?
It is become a hard challenge for educational institution in the country,

In accordance with the background stated earlier, the problem of this analysis is
formulated as follows:
What is the appropriate English Material For The Students Of Pondok Pesantren
Kampus Ainul Yqin Islamic University Of Malang ?
1.3 Objective of Development
It is necessary to include the objectives in this study which can be formulated as
follows: To develop the appropriate English Material For The Students Of Pondok Pesantren
Kampus Ainul Yqin Islamic University Of Malang.
1.4. Specification of the Product
The expected product is the form of appropriate English material for the students of
Pondok Pesantren Kampus Ainul Yaqin Islamic University Of Malang. The developing
material focuses on reading and speaking skills, designed for sixteen meetings with the time
allotment 120 minutes in a week. The expected material is designed lies on some
consideration: Perspective SLA & Teaching Learning , need analysis , students
background and culture .
1.5. Significance of the Study
The study is intended to provide not only theoretically and practically contribution but
also the contribution to the institution and further researchers.
