24. Mate Slug Free ® Die Punch penetrates the material. Slug fractures away from sheet. Punch retracts and slug is free to fall down and away through exit taper of the Slug Free die. Material held securely by stripper before punch makes contact. Pressure point constricts slug. Punch stroke bottoms out as slug squeezes past pressure point.

As I mentioned earlier, Mate standard product is a slug free die. Mate Slug Free® dies eliminate slug pulling. Slug pulling is a condition where the slug returns to the top of the sheet during the stripping portion of the punching cycle. The slug comes between the punch and the top of the sheet on the next cycle. This causes damage to the piece part and the tooling. Slug Free dies eliminate this problem. The Slug Free die has an opening with a constriction point below the surface. The slug cannot return once it passes this point. Once the slug is separated from the punch, it is free to fall away from the punching area. Slug pulling is eliminated.
The first image shows an Ultraform tool at rest. The second image shows that the tool length has been increased. You will note that the length adjustment occurred below the shoulder of the tool, and that the tool height remains constant. The third and final image shows the tool at the bottom of the stroke. You will see there is no possibility of the tool hitting the turret. This is because the Ultraform tooling system allows length adjustment below the shoulder of the tool.
