How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Representations are built through stereotypes of groups of people who interact with each other and have something
in common.
Representations we took into consideration when creating our product were:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•

Class/status
Age
Gender
Sexuality
Regional Identity
Ethnicity
Disability/Ability

We had to also take into consideration whether to challenge or conform to these stereotypes and representations.
The main representations we chose to do were family, childhood innocence, gender, age and mental disability.
Childhood innocence
We chose to represent childhood as innocent and vulnerable. We
did this a number of ways, one of which was the use of high key
lighting. We used this because the bright light represents the
happiness and how full of life the child is. We also used high key
lighting to show how stripped back and therefor innocent the child
was which contrasts a lot with the parallel’s making them even
more powerful. We dressed the child in pyjamas to enhance the
innocence and to make the character look very cute. This would
entice the audience to feel a lot of sympathy for the character. We
chose to use a lot of two shots with the child and girl character to
make the child look vulnerable. The vulnerability comes from the
protection the girl character offers. The two shots show the
relationship between the two and therefor make the child look
vulnerable.
Woman
We chose to represent a stereotypical view or woman and
an anti-stereotypical view of women. The stereotypical
view being maternal and caring. We did this by dressing
both the girl and the child in the same colours to show a
bond between them. We also used a lot of two shots to
show the strong relationship between the two characters.
The close proxemics between them shows how the
protagonist girl character is very protective over the child
and how she looks after him. We created the antistereotypical view of woman by making the character
seem isolated in abandoned places. We shot the scenes of
the girl character on her own at night to show to menacing
nature of the characters mentality. We also used a mixture
of high and low key lighting to juxtapose the two times in
the characters life and therefor representing them in
different ways.
Mental Disability
One of the key representations we chose to show was of mental
disability. A massive part of our plot was the mentality of the
character after the child’s death. We tried to show how
menacing the character is and to highlight the theme of
revenge we wanted to portray. We did this is many ways, one of
which being the use of a typical white hospital gown. This gives
a clinical atmosphere and because the setting isn’t in a hospital
the character looks out of place and sets the audience on edge
and uneasy with the character. We chose to gown to have blood
on it because even though the white of the gown connotes
innocence, the blood shows the corruption of the innocence
and foreshadows the revenge side of the product. We used
make up to make the character look gaunt, pale and slightly
lifeless. This was the show the audience the characters
emotions more about the death of the child. We also used a
variation of long and short takes to show the characters jumbles
thoughts. The low key lighting used emphasises the sinister and
menacing nature of the characters mentality.
