2. INTRODUCTION
What can we see from this visualisation
Half of the map is interspersed with
blue arrows, whereas the other half is
interspersed with pink arrows
One half of the map is blue which
represent the males and the other side
is pink to represent females
In both left and right columns, each
quantile is 200 units greater than the
previous one from bottom to the top
These data are representing the
number of suicides that were
happening during 2007 to 2011
In the centre, there is a gradient
column grouping with different range
of numbers
The use of arrows that are connecting
between either the left column or right
column and the middle column
Every number in this map
The colours of the arrows are
changing gradually with the numbers
The age group from teens to elders
It specifically indicates the association
between age and gender
numerical form to extract and
understand the data in a better way
As the colour of the arrow gets darker,
means more death was happening in
a particular range of age and vice

 We cannot see the phenomenon or story behind unless
we technically use the concrete number to present it
 Self- explanatory, easy to read
 More participation from the audience
But most importantly
makes the INVISIBLE VISIBLE

4. PATTERNS
• Suicidal rates are increasing, while there are many factors
contributing to one’s psychological status, we as presenters whilst
researching found surprisingly that male, is the leading group in
suicide.
• Peak age for male and female suicides are 35-44, after the age of 45,
both gender group’s suicidal rate starts to decrease
• MALE: After 15-24 years old, their suicide rates increase rapidly to
almost 15 00, which is almost 37.5 times high than under 15s
• FEMALE: while female’s suicidal rates increase, it is only 15 times
more in contrast to males

5. CAUSES OF SUICIDE
QUESTION to class: How many of you experience signs of
depression?
• According to Australian Psychology Society which found that “more than 80% of
suicides are men (1,816 of 2,361 in 2010)”
• Beyond Blue “1 in 5 men experience anxiety”
THESE reasons are:
• “age, unemployment, social isolation, chronic illness, and or certain occupations
are the higher causes for high rate male suicides.” Dr Ciaran Mulholland
• Peer/ social pressure, physical change, financial factor, alcohol use, drug use,
relationship breakdown, psychological change are also factors to be considered
BUT why?
• Men are less inclined to communicate feelings of despair or hopelessness, and
are more likely to present a stoic attitude towards misfortune (Howerton et al.,
2007; Witte et al., 2012)

6.  The assumption is that female
suicide rates would be higher than
males
 But in fact male suicide rates are
higher, for every 100 female
suicides, 333 male suicides
happen.
 Though it is important to target
females, it seems that there aren’t
enough information provided for
males.
 Males tend to have a greater
tendency not to recognise or
respond to their own negative
emotions or distress
 They are less communicative about
their emotions and feel like if they
seek help its an act of failure or
weakness
 So this visualisation can help give
more awareness and attention that
male suicides need.
Like more help lines, more support groups
more campaigns directed to males for males.
Its most important for teenagers to have
support groups and the knowledge that help
is available.
Because of the pressures of society and
from their peers they are often
Confused
Lonely
 struggling with their identity
Which often leads to depression or anxiety
and further down the track to possible
suicide.
There are sites like mensline.org.au and
beyonblue-men.org.au
With this information becoming more
visible hopefully there will be more services
created to target those in need of help.

create more initiatives
