God's Plan Revealed in Joseph's Story
1. Genesis 42 – 50
Joseph and His Brothers
Part II : Chap 46-50
God has a plan that
involves all of us.
2. All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts
“ As you Like it”, William Shakespeare, 1623
3. Isaiah 55:8,9
8“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the LORD.
9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts
4. Jeremiah 29:11-12
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper
you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you
will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will
seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be
found by you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back from captivity.[b] I
will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,”
declares the LORD, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried
you into exile.”
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the
LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.
6. 43 Now the famine was still severe in the
land. 2 So when they had eaten all the
grain they had brought from Egypt, their
father said to them, “Go back and buy us a
little more food.”
7. Genesis 45
12 “You can see for yourselves, and so can my brother Benjamin, that it is
really I who am speaking to you. 13 Tell my father about all the honor
accorded me in Egypt and about everything you have seen. And bring my
father down here quickly.”
9. Gen 46
29 Joseph had his chariot made ready and went to Goshen to meet his father
Israel. As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his
father and wept for a long time.
17. 3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn,
my might, the first sign of my strength,
excelling in honor, excelling in power.
4 Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel,
for you went up onto your father’s bed,
onto my couch and defiled it.
Gen 49
Gen 35:22
Spiritual and Social Leadership is right of first born
Spiritual leadership given to Levi
Social leadership given to Judah
18. 5“Simeon and Levi are brothers—
their swords are weapons of violence.
6 Let me not enter their council,
let me not join their assembly,
for they have killed men in their anger
and hamstrung oxen as they pleased.
7 Cursed be their anger, so fierce,
and their fury, so cruel!
I will scatter them in Jacob
and disperse them in Israel. Genesis 34:25-29
Simeon
third largest tribe during start of Exodus (Numbers 1:23) – 59,300
35 years later, at the second wilderness census of Israel, 63% of the tribe
perished and they became the smallest tribe (Numbers 26:14) – 22,200
Levi
Levi were scattered but as priest, so a blessing. Why ? ( Ex 32)
They were not given territory for the LORD was their inheritance, not land
(Joshua 13:33)
19. 8 “Judah, your brothers will praise you;
your hand will be on the neck of your
enemies;
your father’s sons will bow down to you.
9 You are a lion’s cub, Judah;
you return from the prey, my son.
Like a lion he crouches and lies down,
like a lioness—who dares to rouse him?
10 The scepter will not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
until he to whom it belongs shall come
and the obedience of the nations shall be his.
11 He will tether his donkey to a vine,
his colt to the choicest branch;
he will wash his garments in wine,
his robes in the blood of grapes.
12 His eyes will be darker than wine,
his teeth whiter than milk.
Judah, far from exemplary
- Profit motive in getting rid of Joseph (Gen
37:26). - Did not deal faithfully with his
daughter-in-law Tamar (Gen 38:26), and he had
sex with her as a prostitute (Gen 38:18).
- He interceded and offered himself as a
substitute for Joseph (Gen 44:18-34).
Overall, this blessing is an example of the riches of
God’s grace.

20. 13 “Zebulun will live by the
seashore
and become a haven for ships;
his border will extend toward
Sidon.
21. 14 “Issachar is a rawboned[f] donkey
lying down among the sheep pens.[g]
15 When he sees how good is his resting
place
and how pleasant is his land,
he will bend his shoulder to the burden
and submit to forced labor.
Issachar was strong, but docile and lazy. He would enjoy the good land assigned him
but would not strive for it. Therefore, he would be pressed into servitude and the
mere bearing of burdens for his masters.”
22. 16 “Dan will provide justice for his people
as one of the tribes of Israel.
17 Dan will be a snake by the roadside,
a viper along the path,
that bites the horse’s heels
so that its rider tumbles backward.
18 “I look for your deliverance, LORD.
They supplied one of the most prominent of the Judges, Samson (Judges 13:2).
Dan shall be a serpent by the way:
They introduced idolatry into Israel (Judges 18:30).
Jeroboam set up one of his idolatrous golden calves in Dan (1 Kings 12:26-30)
Dan became a center of idol worship in Israel (Amos 8:14).
23. 19 “Gad[i] will be attacked by
a band of raiders,
but he will attack them at
their heels.
24. 19 “Gad[will be attacked by a band of raiders,
but he will attack them at their heels.
20 “Asher’s food will be rich;
he will provide delicacies fit for a king.
21 “Naphtali is a doe set free
that bears beautiful fawns.
25. 22 “Joseph is a fruitful vine,
a fruitful vine near a spring,
whose branches climb over a wall.[k]
23 With bitterness archers attacked him;
they shot at him with hostility.
24 But his bow remained steady,
his strong arms stayed[l] limber,
because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob,
because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,
25 because of your father’s God, who helps you,
because of the Almighty,[m] who blesses you
with blessings of the skies above,
blessings of the deep springs below,
blessings of the breast and womb.
26 Your father’s blessings are greater
than the blessings of the ancient mountains,
than[n] the bounty of the age-old hills.
Let all these rest on the head of Joseph,
on the brow of the prince among[o] his brothers.

in the morning he devours the prey,
in the evening he divides the plunder.”
