Question
Part 1: (contribute 25% to the total score)

• In any country, crime creates lots of nuisance and
  endangers public security and peace. It also caused large
  resources to fund investigations, conduct trials and
  maintain prisons. Like in many parts of the world, Malaysia
  too is experiencing similar challenges on crime. The crime
  rate has registered rapid increment that has driven multiple
  efforts to contain the trend. Studies have shown that rapid
  economic expansion has contributed to the rate. Growing
  population, influx of immigrants, inflation, poverty index,
  high unemployment, parental neglect and many other
  factors contributed to the problem. Why is this happening
  and how do we slow down the increasing trend of crime?

Problem Statement

• Increment in crime rate due to rapid economic
  expansion. Growing population, influx of
  immigrants, inflation, poverty index, high
  unemployment, parental neglect and many
  other factors contributed to the problem.
Benefits and/or impact if problem is
               solved


• Government resources will be allocated into
  useful development rather that to focus on
  areas where crime is a major disruption.
TRIZ process used
Identify the TRIZ tools used and why
            it is being used


• TRIZ 40 design principles can be suitably used
  because there is an functional contradiction
  on the problem which this principle can lead
  to various applicable answers
Potential solutions
• Principle 1 “Segmentation” can be applied to this
  problem where Intervention programs such as
  mentoring, aim to prevent criminal behaviour before it
  occurs. E.g. Community centers with after school
  programs for school children are implemented to curb
  criminal tendencies.

• Principle 2 “Taking out” can be applied to this
  problem. Infiltration, undercover operations can be
  used both to expose criminal behaviour as well as to
  hold individuals accountable for their actions such as
  videos of illegal activities posted on online social
  networking sites.
Potential solutions
• Principle 3 “Local quality” can be applied to
  this problem where role models or mentoring
  for youths in order to have someone positive
  to look up to and hopefully emulate.

• Principle 10 “Prior action” can be applied to
  this problem. Parental influences by steering
  their children into right directions, youths are
  less likely to get involved in drugs and gangs.
Potential solutions
• Principle 11 “Beforehand cushioning” can be
  applied to this problem in which proper
  educations are provided for people to focus
  on the prospect of their successful future and
  hence deter from criminal activities.

• Principle 13 “The other way around” can be
  applied to this problem. Stiff penalties instead
  of leniency are a deterrent for many criminals
Potential solutions
• Principle 21 “Skipping (Rushing through)” can be
  applied to this problem by avoiding unethical
  behaviour and built-up robust positive reinforcement
  towards building youth characteristic.

• Principle 25 “Self-service” can be applied to this
  problem by implementing avenues of communication.
  Law enforcement officials should create proactive
  response programs by permitting citizen easy access to
  crime reports such as free toll lines.

TRIZ Part 1

  • 2. Question Part 1: (contribute 25% to the total score) • In any country, crime creates lots of nuisance and endangers public security and peace. It also caused large resources to fund investigations, conduct trials and maintain prisons. Like in many parts of the world, Malaysia too is experiencing similar challenges on crime. The crime rate has registered rapid increment that has driven multiple efforts to contain the trend. Studies have shown that rapid economic expansion has contributed to the rate. Growing population, influx of immigrants, inflation, poverty index, high unemployment, parental neglect and many other factors contributed to the problem. Why is this happening and how do we slow down the increasing trend of crime?

  • 4. Problem Statement • Increment in crime rate due to rapid economic expansion. Growing population, influx of immigrants, inflation, poverty index, high unemployment, parental neglect and many other factors contributed to the problem.
  • 5. Benefits and/or impact if problem is solved • Government resources will be allocated into useful development rather that to focus on areas where crime is a major disruption.
  • 7. Identify the TRIZ tools used and why it is being used • TRIZ 40 design principles can be suitably used because there is an functional contradiction on the problem which this principle can lead to various applicable answers
  • 8. Potential solutions • Principle 1 “Segmentation” can be applied to this problem where Intervention programs such as mentoring, aim to prevent criminal behaviour before it occurs. E.g. Community centers with after school programs for school children are implemented to curb criminal tendencies. • Principle 2 “Taking out” can be applied to this problem. Infiltration, undercover operations can be used both to expose criminal behaviour as well as to hold individuals accountable for their actions such as videos of illegal activities posted on online social networking sites.

Potential solutions • Principle 3 “Local quality” can be applied to this problem where role models or mentoring for youths in order to have someone positive to look up to and hopefully emulate. • Principle 10 “Prior action” can be applied to this problem. Parental influences by steering their children into right directions, youths are less likely to get involved in drugs and gangs.

Potential solutions • Principle 11 “Beforehand cushioning” can be applied to this problem in which proper educations are provided for people to focus on the prospect of their successful future and hence deter from criminal activities. • Principle 13 “The other way around” can be applied to this problem. Stiff penalties instead of leniency are a deterrent for many criminals

Potential solutions • Principle 21 “Skipping (Rushing through)” can be applied to this problem by avoiding unethical behaviour and built-up robust positive reinforcement towards building youth characteristic. • Principle 25 “Self-service” can be applied to this problem by implementing avenues of communication. Law enforcement officials should create proactive response programs by permitting citizen easy access to crime reports such as free toll lines.
