2. RULES OF PUNCTUATION
PERIODS.- The period has 3 primary fuctions:
A. To show that a sentences has ended
B. To show that an abbreviation has ended
C. As a decimal point
Examples :
a) We are going to the mall today.
b) We are shopping on State St. today.
c) The shoes cost $5.89.
3. Comma Rules .-
1.- Use commas to separate ítems in a list of 3 or more
2.- Use a comma to separate clauses independents when they are joined by the
following conjuctions: and , or , for , nor , so , but , yet.
3.- Use a comma to separate a dependent clause from an independent clause.
4.- Use a comma(s) to separate any Word or phrase that is not essential to the sentence
meaning this phrase provides extra information about the subject.
5.- Use a comma to separate a quotation from the rest of a sentence.
6.- Use a comma to separate an introductory element from the rest of a sentence.
7.- Use a comma to separate the name of a city, country or state.
8.- Use a comma to separate the day , week, month, and the year.
Examples:
1.- I need to buy eggs, carrots, ice cream, cookies and milk
2.- I want to buy a cell phone, but it’s too expensive.
3.- Without wáter, the plant will die.
4.- Daniel Garrison, a framer, wakes up very early.
5.- “I’m tired”, he muttered.
6.- Hi, how are you?.
7.- I visited Florence, Italy las summer.
8.- Today is Thursday, April 18, 1943.
4. Exclamation points.- Use to show emotion, emphasis, or surprise
Ejemple:
Yay! We won!
Question Marks.- Use a question mark only after a direct question.
Ejemple:
Will you go with me?
5. The colon.- A colon means "that is to say" or "here's what I mean."
Colons and semicolons should never be used interchangeably.
Exist 7 ways:
1.- Use a colon to introduce a series of items.
Do not capitalize the first item after the colon (unless it's a proper noun).
2.- Avoid using a colon before a list when it directly follows a verb or preposition.
3.- When listing items one by one, one per line, following a colon.
4.- After the salutation in a business letter or memo
5.- To separate chapter and verse in scripture
6.- To separates hours from minutes.
7.- The show ratios.
6. Examples:
1.- You may be required to bring many things: sleeping bags, pans, and warm clothing.
2.- I want the following: butter, sugar, and flour.
3.- I want an assistant who can do the following:
a) input data
b) write reports
c) complete tax forms
4.- Dear Husband:
5.- Today studied James 4:10
6.- The movie start is at 5:00 p.m.
7.- Pour in milk and flour ratio 3 : 1 sugar
7. Semicolons.- has 3 primary functions:
A) .- To combine 2 complete sentences that are not joined by a conjunction.
B) .- To separate complete sentences that are joined by a conjunctive
adverb.
C).- To separate ítems in a list.
Examples:
a).- The president was very popular; he easily won the election
b).- Jane likes fruit; however, she does not like apples.
b).- The answer to the test are: 1, A ; 2, D ; 3, F ; and 4, B

The parties in informal letters are:
