Because religion news matters

Religion News Service distributes religion news to over 175 subscribing
newspapers and magazines across the United States and abroad. These publications
subscribe to RNS because their readers are hungry for information about how
religion plays a role the current news of the day.
There are some communities however which don’t have this depth of newspaper
coverage, and that is why Religion News Service created a number of hyper-local
websites in communities where we could fill the need with local religion coverage.
Spokane Washington, Toledo Ohio, Columbia Missouri, Hartford Connecticut, and
Wilmington North Carolina. These are very unique communities with a couple of
common characteristics. First, their local papers do not have in-depth religion
coverage and secondly, they have very rich religious diversity and history.
Like the communities, each editor is diverse in his/her background, but they share
experience in journalism, religion and most importantly, strong community ties.
Each has an unpaid staff of bloggers covering the variety of faiths and values that
make up their community. As nonsectarian news coverage, each site moves in an
unbiased way to cover all faith groups and activities.
In addition to news reporting, each editor has created a method to engage the
community and grow their following. In Spokane it is monthly “coffee talks” where
local experts lead a town-hall discussion on some pre-planned topic. In Toledo, a
film festival and fundraising dinner host well-known authors as speakers and in
Wilmington, residents have come together to participate in walking tours of
religious art and history.
This is the new model for religion news in communities, and we are thrilled to have
grown to over 80,000 followers. We are now in a position to offer you access to
