1. Personal Web Space Information
Faculty & Staff Members
How do I publish to my personal web space?
The Web Publishing Wizard will NOT work. To publish to your personal web space you just copy and
paste from your file storage location to your web space using these directions:
1. Open Windows Explorer
2. In the address bar type in your ftp location, ftp://www.northwood.edu/staff/username (be
certain to substitute your REAL username in the last location and enter the correct slashes)
3. You will be prompted for a username and password. Your username is the same as your
Northwood network username. However, the password will be different than your Northwood
network password. Your “web space password” was emailed to you when your web space
was created.
4. Open the location where the web files are currently stored (could be on your S drive or on a
floppy disk in A?). Next select the files that you want to publish to your web space. You can
select multiple files by holding down the CTRL key while you click on the filenames.
5. Go to the EDIT command, and then click on COPY.
6. Open your “web space” location
7. Go to the EDIT command, and then click on PASTE.
8. Congratulations! You have now just published your web pages!
Can I access my personal web space from off-campus?
You must be on the Northwood network to publish to your personal web space. If you are using the
Northwood dial-up connection, you can publish to your web page using the steps listed above.
What if I forget my personal web space password?
If you forget your personal web space password, you can call the Help Desk and a call will be opened
to change it.
How do others view my web pages?
For others to view your web page they can use any web browser and access the web address
http://www.northwood.edu/staff/username (again be certain to substitute your REAL username in the
last location and enter the correct slashes). They can view your web page from any location as long as
they have an internet connection.
2. What software should I use to create my personal web pages?
Northwood University has campus-wide licenses for Microsoft Word and FrontPage. You can create
your web pages using Microsoft Word and the SAVE AS HTML command. If you prefer a more
sophisticated web development software, like Dreamweaver which is the Northwood standard, it will
need to be purchased individually by your department. This can be coordinated through the Help
Desk. Unfortunately, your web space does not support FrontPage extensions. Some of the features
specific to FrontPage will not work properly when viewed on the Internet (ex. the FrontPage counter)
What is the size limit on my personal web space?
You are allowed 100 mb as personal web space. However, please remember to use your web space for
web-related information only. Your web space is not to be used as a storage place for non-web related
files; remember to always use your S drive for this.
Is my web space being backed up?
Yes, your web space is being backed up regularly. However, we recommend you keep a copy of your
original files on your S drive.
Who do I call with problems or questions?
If you have any further questions please contact the Computer Services Help Desk at X-4421, email at
helpdesk@northwood.edu, or stop in Griswold 1.
