Electric Heating Elements and Their Place in Today's World
1. Electric Heating Elements and Their Place in Today's World
With the prices of natural gas, petroleum, coal and other such non-renewable sources of energy
increasing by the minute, in the international as well as domestic markets, people all over the
world are being forced to reevaluate their energy requirements and usages. Wastage of energy in
any form is not an option at all anymore. The way people end up spending a lot of unnecessary
energy is by heating water, reheating food, and doing other such activities that can be performed
just as well by utilizing renewable or alternative sources of energy.
In this regard, Electric Heating Elements deserve a noteworthy mention. These are nothing but
electric heating systems that utilize a resistance to generate heat energy by conversion from
electrical energy. For example let us the simple case of an electric bulb. The electricity passes
through a tin copper or tungsten wire fitted in the bulb. The resistance to the flow of current
offered by the filament causes it to heat up to very high temperatures. This heat causes the
filament to become re hot and then white hot. This color change produces the light we see.
Similarly resistances can be used for other heating purposes as well.
These resistances are often referred to as elements or heating elements. They are generally of
three main types – ribbon, coiled or straight. The ribbon and coiled varieties are more common in
appliances that are required to generate large amounts of heat. While Straight Elements are seen
in appliances where a low but uniform level of heating is required. Such heating elements are
seen indelicate appliances like toasters, clothes driers, etc.
Electric heating elements have become a part of most new age kitchens today. Induction
cookers, electric kettles, coffee makers, are common fixtures in modern kitchens. While most of
these use coiled or ribbon type elements, electric pressure cookers of today have been seen to use
straight elements.
Several people, homemakers and even culinary experts are of the opinion that food cooked
through electronic appliances simply does not meet the standards of taste and flavor compared to
those cooked via traditional methods. This however is not a true claim at all.
Apart from the concerns regarding the taste of food, electric systems are way more efficient and
environment friendly than gas cookers and other traditional methods of cooking. Although they
are relatively new and uncommon in today's scenario such a day is not far when electric
appliances become the norm.
