2. Reproductive Alternatives:
First test tube baby born in 1978
In U.S., 48,000 women each year deliver
babies that began in a laboratory
Approximately 70,000 babies are born from
sperm donor pregnancies each year in the
U.S., mainly to single women and lesbians
(by artificial insemination)
3. Assisted Reproductive
Technologies
Are expensive
Are controversial and pose ethical questions
One IVF procedure costs $12,000 to $14,000,
and more than one attempt is often needed
Since multiple embryos are implanted during
IVF, the twin birth rate rose by 70% from
1980 to 2004, and triplet-or-more increased by
380% during the same period.
5. OCTOMOM caused
international media frenzy!
Gave birth to octuplets
in January 2009
Already had 6 children
from 6 pregnancies
through IVF
Single mom, no job
Criticized for being
selfish and irresponsible Nadya Suleman
6. Assisted Reproductive Technologies-
Oldest Mother in Spain
Maria del Carmen Bousada
Women past menopause

Point to Ponder: Should elderly parents who
may die before their children reach
adulthood be denied the use of ART?
7. Update
MADRID (July 15) -- A Spanish woman
who deceived a U.S. fertility clinic
about her age and become the oldest
woman to give birth has died at 69,
leaving behind 2-year-old twins,
newspapers reported Wednesday.
Maria del Carmen Bousada gave birth in December 2006 after
telling a clinic in Los Angeles that she was 55, the facility's
maximum age for single women receiving in-vitro
fertilization. Guinness World Records said the 66-year-old
was the oldest on record to give birth and the case ignited
fierce debate over how much responsibility fertility clinics
have over their patients.
