Kumamoto Castle was constructed in 1607 and was the site of Japan's last civil war in 1877. Most of the present castle buildings are reconstructions from the 1960s. Mt. Aso, located in Kumamoto Prefecture, is one of the largest active volcanoes in Japan. The low-floor tram system introduced in Kumamoto in 1997 was the first in Japan to be accessible for the elderly and disabled. Suizenji Park in Kumamoto City is a strolling garden built in the 1630s, modeled after scenic spots along the Tokaido road, and features ponds, hills, and plantings.

On the occasion of the castle 's 400th anniversary, the Honmaru Goten, the former palace building in the castle's innermost citadel, is being reconstructed, and is scheduled to open to the public in spring 2008.

4. Mt. Aso is the largest active volcano in Japan , and is among the largest in the world. It stands in Kumamoto Prefecture , on the island of Kyūshū . Its peak is 1592 m above sea level . Its caldera is 25 km across north to south and 18 km across east to west. The caldera has a circumference of around 120 km (75 miles), although sources vary on the exact distance.

It is the one that this low-floor tram was developed in Germany (Production and the assembly of the body were done in Japan) though it was seen to run well in the street in Europe. And, it reinforces, it will be done by two organizations this spring, and three low-floor trams are running now. At present, it is only Hiroshima City that the low-floor tram runs in Japan that began to run with Kumamoto City here in June this year (1999). The low-floor tram of Hiroshima City is called a green mover by five car organization.

Suizenji Park 水前寺成趣園 水前寺成趣園 （すいぜんじじょうじゅえん）は 熊本県 熊本市 水前寺公園（町名）にある大名 庭園 。面積約 7 万 3 千平方メートル。通称は 水前寺公園 。豊富な阿蘇伏流水が湧出して作った池を中心にした桃山式回遊庭園で、築山や浮石、芝生、松などの植木で 東海道五十三次 の景勝を模したといわれる。 熊本藩 の初代藩主・ 細川忠利 が寛永 13 年（ 1636 年）頃から築いた「水前寺御茶屋」が始まり。 細川綱利 のときに泉水・築山などが作られ、現在見るような形となった。 陶淵明 の詩「帰去来辞」の一節「園日渉以成趣」からとって「成趣園」と名付けられた。安永 5 年（ 1776 年）には東側に馬場が設けられた。 明治 に至り官有となったが、中心となる御茶屋「酔月亭」は明治 10 年（ 1877 年）の 西南戦争 で消失し、泉水・築山なども荒廃した。これを憂慮した有志が払い下げを要望し、明治 11 年に細川藩主を祀る 出水神社 が園内に創建され、庭園は出水神社の社地として払い下げられた。
