5. What is SharePoint? SharePoint: A web application platform developed by Microsoft Corporation. It is designed as a centralized replacement for multiple web applications and supports various combinations of enterprise website requirements. It is typically associated with web content management and document management systems. Multi-purpose platforms include: intranet, extranet, internet, websites, document/content/file/records management, social media/networking, enterprise search, web development platform, collaboration, business intelligence, process/information integration, third=party developed solutions.

Insert Foot In Mouth Here: “SharePoint is a technology, so it can be ran by IT without business engagement.” IT/top management make all SharePoint decisions “If we build it, they will use it.” No internal marketing, training, launching events No champions in each area/department of the business “SharePoint will solve ALL of the company business problems.” 80/20 rule
7. Content Types What is it? A Content Type is a reusable collection of metadata (columns), workflow, behavior, and other settings for a category of items or documents in a SharePoint 2010 list or document library. They enable you to manage the settings for a category of information in a centralized, reusable way. Essentially, they let you do two things: Store the exact same type of content in multiple locations. Store multiple types of content in the same location.
8. Folders vs. Metadata cont. Metadata (Metalanguage): data about other data. It can be used in any sort of media to describe the contents of the information.
12. Folders vs. Document Sets Document Sets:components, similar to folders, that enable users to collaborate on related documents without having to create a new document library or site.

Wrap Up SharePoint can do/solve a lot of business problems and assist companies with: Organization Social media connection Collaboration Document management Efficiency/effectiveness SharePoint will NOT magically solve all your business problems. You must support SharePoint with user champions, marketing, training, and mile stone events in order for SharePoint to support your end users. 80/20 rule: SharePoint can usually out of the box solve 80% of your issues.
