2. British Manufacturer Ritherdon design
all the steel products detailed within this
brochure at their factory in Darwen.
Ritherdon therefore can adapt or provide a total new design to be
developed with a customer’s particular requirement. Most products
are stock items, therefore delivery is usually within 48 hours of
receipt of an order. Delivery is made by a courier or via Ritherdons
own transport.
As all the Ritherdon units are made from steel, this provides a very robust product and due to
the strength of stainless steel, the units will have an extended service life of in excess
of 30 years as opposed to the GRP units and aluminium products. There are many associated benefits
to using the Ritherdon unit and listed below are a few:-
• No need to contact the utility company as you are not interfering with the
gas or electric supply, therefore there are no disconnection or reconnection fees.
• As outlined in the Gas Act 1986, the consumer is responsible for taking care of
the meter and for ensuring the gas meter is housed correctly.
• IEE Wiring Regulations (17th Edition) state that, ‘a barrier or enclosure shall be
firmly secured in place and have sufficient stability and durability to maintain
the required degree of protection and appropriate separation of live parts’.
Plastic GRP meter boxes seldom provide the stability, durability and protection that is
required under these regulations.

The History of Ritherdon
& Co Ltd
Our company was founded by the Managing Director’s
great grandfather, Percy Ritherdon, in Bolton in 1895.
Probably due to Percy’s interests in chemistry and magic,
the company initially concentrated on electro-plating,
but also on making tricks for magicians: a rather
unconventional range of products.
In the early 20th century, Ritherdons began to produce
more sheet metalwork with “the renowned “Ritho” Steel
and Non-Ferrous Products” being advertised in 1929
(electro-plating was gradually phased out through the
1980s and 90s as part of ongoing efforts to reduce our
environmental impact).
We moved to our present factory in Lorne St, Darwen
in 1947 and our expertise in manufacturing cabinets,
control panels and other specialist sheet metalwork
took off through the mid 20th century.
In the 1970’s Ritherdons began to work closely with
the electricity boards and we developed for them our
range of metal meter boxes and the early door
and frame units.
3. The Ritherdon range of
replacement doors and frames
is a best seller when it comes to
repairing damaged glass fibre
(GRP) electricity and gas meter
boxes. GRP boxes are prone to
damage due to wear and tear and
also vandalism, resulting in an
unsightly, but more importantly,
a dangerous condition.
GRP meter boxes come in all shapes and sizes
and as market leader, Ritherdon have a complete
range of replacement doors and frames to fit all
of them.
The units are fabricated using commercial grade
stainless steel or electrolytically zinc-coated
steel to resist atmospheric corrosion, and coated
in white polyester powder to provide a more
durable protective finish; but can be painted over
should the house owner desire a different colour.
All units are supplied with appropriate fixings for
installation, which can be completed in a matter
of minutes. It is simply a matter of removing the
existing door and fitting the replacement door
and frame to the damaged box. If the box is
badly damaged, we have another option which
is a front fixing unit (R10) that is also easy to fit,
but in this case it is fastened to the wall around
the box. Also included is an easy-to-handle, long-
reach, plastic key to gain entry into the meter
box after installation.
To mark our 100-years
of Incorporation, Ritherdon
& Co were awarded with a Centenary Certificate by
Companies House to commemorate our Centenary year.

“In my day to day work I
often visit properties where
the external gas and electric
meter housings are broken
or in disrepair. If they cannot
be repaired then I use the
steel replacement doors and

by Ritherdon. These are
robust and enhance the
appearance of the property.
They are also easy to fit and
come in various sizes.
I have found Ritherdon to

INSTALLATION
To fit our doors and frames the most
you will need is: Drill (inc masonry bit
for R10s), screwdriver, possibly pliers (to
remove knockouts), sealant (optional)
plus some very basic DIY skills.
You will not need:
Any special tools, specialist contractors,
or to pay the utility company to
disconnect then reconnect the meter.
STRENGTH
Steel, plus durable powder
coating, makes much stronger,
therefore, longer-lasting, doors
and frames than alternative
materials such as GRP or
aluminium.
“...the new boxes fit nicely,
and are a considerable
improvement on
what was there before.”
Property Services Manager,
Langstane Housing Association
“We have previously
had problems
with the meter
cupboards being
broken into and
causing us immense
inconvenience, extra
repair costs and loss
of rental income due
to extra downtime.
I am pleased to say
that since using
the void cover
plates none of the
properties that these
have been fitted
to have had any of
the issues previously
stated.”

When measuring a damaged meter box, it is
very important that you measure carefully,
without adding any extra to the three
dimensions that are detailed in the
photographs below.
Choosing The Correct Ritherdon Door and Frame
• Take the 3 measurements as indicated below
• Note whether it is gas or electric

Cestria Community Housing said:
“Our staff find the Ritherdon door and frame
units very easy to measure and fit due to the catalogue
that Ritherdon provided. Once fitted, the units are very secure
and as a result we have seen a decrease in gas and electricity
meter boxes being vandalised – saving us time and money”.
Cardiff Community Housing Association (CCHA) said:
“The purpose for selecting Ritherdon’s meter box repair units was
purely based on the design and cost. The units are vandal resistant,
secure by design and the paint selection acted as a deterrent for theft
due to no magnetism. The units are aesthetically pleasing and give a vast
improvement to the façade of the building. The original plastic meter boxes
we previously used were forever being broken by tenants and third-parties”.

18. Repair of floor-mounted or semi-
concealed gas boxes - R24
We now have three options for repairing
floor-mounted, gas meter boxes:
• Replacement lids - the R24M and
R24H lids for repairing Mitras (M) boxes
and Hepworth (H) boxes.
• Replacement lid and frame units if the
damage is too great simply to replace
the lid and, again, there are units for
Mitras (M) and Hepworth (H) boxes.
• Replacement lid and body units for
pre-payment meter boxes.
Like the rest of the Ritherdon range, the R24 units
greatly increase the longevity and security of the GRP
meter box that they repair.
The R24 units are also powder coated brown, so that
they match the plastic boxes. As with the rest of the
range, fitting the R24s is very easy.
An R24 lid fits the meter box in the same way as the
original plastic lid and the lid and frame units fasten
through the plastic box with a screw and nut. All the
necessary fittings are supplied with the units.

Fire Sealed Unit
There were various sizes of the units tested and detailed
below are the smallest and largest units. In accordance with
the test, all products within this size range will comply with
aforementioned standards, it also possible for them to be
made slightly larger.
For further details please contact 01254 819100.
The Fire Seal is a modified version of the existing Ritherdon
Co meter box door and frame units that incorporates multiple
fire-resistance design elements, including steel construction,
intumescent seals etc. It is designed so that, during a significant
fire in a building, it will provide at least 60 minutes mechanical
protection (i.e. hold back the flames) and also prevent the
transmission of smoke and harmful fumes through any
aperture that the unit covers (it doesn’t necessarily have
to be a meter enclosure).
The Fire Sealed Unit is tested in
accordance with BS EN 1366-3:2009 and
BS EN 1363-1:2012 and demonstrated to
provide protection against fire penetration
for 60minutes from either side of the

“In order to support assessment in the increase of the scope of application
of the various Ritherdon units in the full range of orientation and
construction scenarios, the direct field of application guidelines given
within BSEN 1366-3: 2009 and extended field of application rules given
within BS EN 15269-1: 2010 have been used as a basis for extending the
scope of application from that which was tested. The following sections
set out the combinations of Ritherdon meter box enclosures, meter
box enclosure repair units and Fire Seal Units, supporting materials and
orientation by which a required integrity period may be achieved.
Meter Box Enclosures
The cited test evidence directly demonstrates that the Meter Box Enclosure
is capable of maintaining integrity performance when installed opening
either away from or towards the fire risk side and within a timber stud
partition type for a minimum of 60 minutes when tested following the
principles of BSEN 1366-3: 2009 and BSEN 1363-1: 2012 between the sizes
tested.
Meter Box Enclosure Repair Unit
The cited test evidence directly demonstrates that the Meter Box Enclosure
repair unit is capable of maintaining integrity performance when installed
opening either away from or towards the fire risk side and within a timber
stud partition type, for a minimum of 60 minutes when tested following
the principles of BSEN 1366-3: 2009 and BSEN 1383-1: 2012 between the
sizes tested.
Fire Seal Units

R3 Flush Mounted Meter Cupboard
The usual choice for outdoor meter
cupboards on housing stock is the popular
unit made from glass-reinforced plastic
(GRP).
In many situations, however, the use of metal instead of GRP
cupboards is preferred or even required, and where fire or
fume hazards could occur, or when there is a need to protect
the unit from vandal attack, the Ritherdon range of steel
meter boxes has long provided the ideal answer.
Made to the dimensions specified in the Electricity Supply
Industry Standard ESI 12-3, the range includes Small, Medium
and Large boxes designed for either semi-recessed, flush or
surface mounted fitting.
The units are fabricated from corrosion resistant commercial
grade stainless steel or electrolytically zinc-coated steel, and
are finished using the latest powder coating techniques for
added durability.
R3 Flush Mounted Meter Cupboard
Fully recessed with the door flush with the wall surface.
Cupboard and door supplied as separate items to allow
installation of the cupboard during building work and
attachment of the door later to protect its finish.
Method of attachment of door and frame to pre-fixed box
allows for some degree of adjustment. Meter board and
earthing stud fitted to box as standard. Cable entry holes
fitted with blind grommets to allow choice of positioning.

Fortunately, since the utility
companies don’t need regular access
to meter boxes on void properties, it
is temporarily possible to increase the
box security above the standard, tri-
key-operated lock. For this, we have
two products and an extra option to
our domestic metering range:
Void Box Cover Plate
A strengthened steel plate which
is fixed to the wall, covering and
protecting virtually all of the
meter box.
• Highly vandal resistant
• Suitable for any meter box,
including those without
Ritherdon door and frame units
• Fixing holes spaced and slotted
to fit plugs and screws between
bricks
• Easy to use again once the
property is no longer void
• Supplied with a plain metal
finish, or painted if the plate
needs to be more discreet
Locking Assembly
• Adds two more fastening points,
making the door fixing much
stronger
• Enables the fitting of a padlock
to the meter box door
• Easy to remove for access to the
meter box during refurbishment
work
• Visually more discreet than a
full plate
• Fits the full range of Ritherdon
meter box door and frame units
• The assembly can be re-used
many times over on different
sites
Extra Lock Option
• Just like the two other void
products, this option is available
for our whole range
• The meter box remains easily
accessible during refurbishment
work on the property
• The most discreet of the three
options, with the meter box
looking no different when the
property is unoccupied
Void Products
This has been designed
specifically for the storage
of A4 documents such as
lift maintenance records
and fire registers.
Sturdily manufactured from fully welded
1.5mm thick steel, the cabinet is coated
in white polyester powder for added
durability. White is the standard colour,
but we are happy to quote for alternative
colours. The door of the SecuriBox can
be screen-printed according to your
requirements. A radial pin tumbler lock
from a range with more than 2000 key
differs provides security, and two keys
are supplied with each cabinet.

Ritherdon Void Property
Meter Box Range
Unoccupied properties
(voids) often become
targets for opportunistic
vandalism and theft.
On top of the financial
cost, this can create a
hazard to the public if
electricity or gas supplies
are left exposed.
