Addiction is characterized by the continued repetition of a behavior despite adverse consequences. Physiological dependence and tolerance develop as the body adapts to substances. Withdrawal refers to physical and psychological symptoms experienced when stopping substance use. Alcoholism involves compulsive and uncontrolled alcohol consumption. Risk increases with higher volumes and larger occasional amounts. It can damage mental health, brain function and increase health risks over time. Genetics and childhood trauma increase risk. Drug use starts as curiosity but continues due to feeling good or stopping bad feelings. Signs include needing more of the drug to feel effects and symptoms like nausea and shaking. Compulsive overeating involves frequent uncontrolled binge eating episodes where people feel out of control and consume food past fullness. It
2. Addiction is the continued repetition of a
behavior despite adverse consequences, or a
neurological impairment leading to such behaviors.
Physiological dependence occurs when the body
has to adjust to the substance by incorporating the
substance into its "normal" functioning. Tolerance is
the process by which the body continually adapts to
the substance and requires increasingly larger
amounts to achieve the original effects. Withdrawal
refers to physical and psychological symptoms

with alcohol, and is
generally used to
mean compulsive an

of alcoholic
beverages.
4. Signs and symptoms
The risk of alcohol dependence begins at low levels of drinking
and increases directly with both the volume of alcohol consumed and a
pattern of drinking larger amounts on an occasion. Alcoholism can have
adverse effects on mental health, causing psychiatric disorders and
increasing the risk of suicide. A depressed mood is a common symptom.
problems or irregularity of the menstrual cycle, and early menopause on
women. Damage to brain function, and psychological health can be
increasingly affected over time. Risk of committing criminal offences,
including child abuse, domestic violence, rape, burglary and assault.
5. Causes
Genes that influence the metabolism of
alcohol also influence the risk of alcoholism,
and may be indicated by a family history of
alcoholism. Severe childhood trauma is also
associated with a general increase in the risk
of drug dependency.
6. Drugs
People experiment with drugs for many different
reasons. Many first try drugs out of curiosity, to have a
good time, because friends are doing it, or in an effort to
improve athletic performance or ease another problem,
such as stress, anxiety, or depression. People who
experiment with drugs continue to use them because the
substance either makes them feel good, or stops them
from feeling bad.
7. Signs, symptoms and causes:
You need to use more of the drug to experience
the same effects you used to attain with smaller
amounts. Nausea, restlessness, insomnia, depression,
sweating, shaking, and anxiety. Bloodshot eyes, pupils
larger or smaller than usual. Changes in appetite or
sleep patterns. Sudden loss weight. Tremors, slurred
speech, or impaired coordination.
8. Compulsive overeating
It´s a compulsive behavior
characterized by excessive food
consumption.
An individual suffering from
compulsive overeating engages in
frequent episodes of uncontrolled
eating, or binge eating, during
which they may feel frenzied or out
of control, often consuming food
past the point of being full.
The term binge eating as slang means eating when
not hungry. Their obsession is demonstrated in that they
spend excessive amounts of time and thought devoted to
food, and secretly plan or fantasize about eating.
9. Sings and symptoms
Feeling of loss of control. Eating much more
rapidly. Eating alone. Feelings of guilt. Preoccupation
with body weight. Depression or mood swings. Rapid
weight gain. Significantly decreased mobility due to
weight gain.
Withdrawal from
activities because of binge
eating. History of many
different unsuccessful
diets.
